Welcome back for Term Four. I hope you had some sort of a break over the school holidays and were lucky enough to get away for a few days.

Staffing Updates

Mrs Taylor Brooks (Learning Support Officer) last day at Sacred Heart will be this Friday. Mrs Brooks has been appointed to a teaching position at Irymple South PS. We thank Tayler for her contribution to the Sacred Heart school community over the last two years and wish her all the best in her new role.

In other staff news, Mrs Jaimi Willersdorf has been appointed to the replacement classroom position in Kyema when Mrs Taylor begins maternity leave at the end of Week Three. Mrs Willersdorf will begin at the beginning of Week Three to allow for a period of transition.

Welcome to Sacred Heart

This term we welcomed Carter (Karinya) & Cooper (Eumeralla) Bush to Sacred Heart. We also welcome her parents Shannon & Christopher to our school community.

We also welcome welcome third year Latrobe University student teacher Miss Elizabeth Rowe. Elizabeth will work in Barramunga with Mrs Whitehouse for this four week placement. Please make her welcome.

School Advisory Council (SAC)

On the evening of Tuesday 25th October the Sacred Heart Primary School Annual General Meeting will take place at 6pm. This year we will have vacancies on our Advisory Council as some of our current members will complete their term of office. If you would like to be nominated as a council member, please contact the Office for a nomination form. If you have any questions about the role of a council member, please don't hesitate to speak to one of our current members; Taryn Hunt, Rachael Fyfe, Amanda King, Eric Oguzkaya, Sarah Ryan and Warren Henderson or myself for further information.

2023 Enrolment Availability

This is a reminder for any of our families who will not be at Sacred Heart in 2023 to please notify us as soon as possible as we will begin planning for classes for 2023.

Also, we do have space for enrolments for students who will next year be in Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4. If you know of anyone who may be interested in enrolling we ask them to enquire at the school asap as there are limited places available.

2023 Prep’s Transition Program - Kinder’ Visits

As part of 2023 Prep’s Transition Program, ‘Kinder’ visits continue next week where their buddy (2022 Grade 5 students) will spend some time with them. The Grade 5 students who have already attended the kindergarten this week have done a fantastic job.

Mission Month

We are off to a great start with Mission Month with a fantastic Mission Month Mass and Casual Clothes day this week. We have our Hot Dog & Ice Cream lunch on Tuesday 11th October and Icy Poles are being sold on Monday 10th October & Thursday 13th October.

As part of our Mission fundraising we have a Collingwood jumper signed by the complete 2022 AFL playing list. The jumper comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. It has been kindly donated by the Collingwood Football Club and we thank Josh Carmichael for supplying it to the school. We will be holding a silent auction that will close at 12pm on Friday 21st October. If you want to bid please call in at the Office. We will keep the community informed at times as to the current bid.

Last Term there was a document sent home explaining that we are having a Slime Spectacular Colour Run to conclude our Mission Month. As part of this fundraiser we are asking students to collect sponsorships that will go towards Mission Month. Students are rewarded with prizes for the money they raise. This whole process can be completed online via the link below.

Assembly - Cooinda

Thank you to our Student Leadership Team for hosting today's Assembly. Cooinda will host our next assembly to be held in the Stadium at 2.30pm on Friday 14th October.

We have a number of different SSV events occurring in week two:

Regional Athletics in Bendigo on Monday 10th October with 20 students travelling to Bendigo to compete.
Year 5/6 Boys Division Volleyball at the Mildura Sporting Precinct on Wednesday 12th October.
Year 5/6 Boys & Girls Division Tennis at the Mildura Tennis courts on Wednesday 12th October.
Year 3/4 Basketball at the 8th Street Stadium on Wednesday.

Learning Diversity News

SHPS has an ongoing partnership with Lime Therapy. The school accesses the support of a Speech Pathologist on a weekly basis and an Occupational Therapist on a needs basis. Both professionals support our students - Speech Pathologist - articulation and pragmatics skills; Occupational Therapist - Observation of class groupings to support teachers to develop strategies to support their students, in the classroom.

What is a speech pathologist?

Speech pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties

with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and

using voice. They work with people who have difficulty communicating because of

developmental delays, stroke, brain injuries, learning disability, intellectual disability, cerebral

palsy, dementia and hearing loss, as well as other problems that can affect speech and language.

People who experience difficulties swallowing food and drink safely can also be helped by a

speech pathologist. – Speech Pathology Australia, 2022.

Every child is unique, as is their speech and language development. However, there are ages we

expect children to develop speech and language by. If a child is not reaching their key

milestones, it is important to have the child assessed by a speech pathologist. The ‘wait and see’

approach can result in missed opportunity to provide early intervention.

By the age of three, children should be able to use the sounds: p, b, m, d, n, h, t, k, g, w, ng, f and y.

Familiar adults and children should be able to understand about 75% of what a three-year-old

has to say. You should be able to begin to have a conversation with a three-year-old. Young

children often experience ear infections. If a child is experiencing ear infections, this may impact

their ability to hear speech sounds. If your child is frequently unwell, or you have concerns

about their speech development, speak to your GP about a referral to have your child’s hearing

assessed. Children typically experience a period of ‘language explosion’ by the age of three,

therefore this is the age a child may begin to stutter. Approximately 9% of three-year-olds will

experience a stutter. Although some children’s stutter may naturally resolve on its own, it is

impossible to identify if the child will recover naturally, or if the stutter will persist into

childhood and beyond. Early intervention is key to reduce the impact of a stutter. If you notice

your child is stuttering, an assessment by a speech pathologist is highly recommended. The

current evidence suggests that intervention is most likely to be successfully if the child is under

six years old when receiving treatment, however the earlier the better!

By the age of four, you should be able to understand 90-100% of what your child is saying. A

child should now be developing the speech sounds: l, j, ch, s, v, sh and z. Children may poke their

tongue through the front of their teeth when they are learning to make the /s/ sound. This is

called an ‘interdental lisp’. If a child presents with an interdental lisp past the age of four, speech

pathology intervention is recommended. A ‘lateral lisp’ is when a child makes a ‘slushy’

sounding ‘s’. It may sound like the child has too much saliva in their mouth. Think about ‘Sid’

from the ‘Ice Age’. A lateral lisp is not typical in childhood development and should be treated

early by a speech pathologist. Your child should be developing preferred friends and enjoying

playing collaboratively with this friend. A child should be able to take on a ‘role’ in play with

their peers and be flexible about which role they take on.

By the time your child enters school, they should be able to be understood 100% of the time and

be able to say all speech sounds, except for the voiceless th sound (for example, the sound in

toothpaste, thin and thought). They may still replace their ‘r’ or ‘l’ sound with a ‘w’ or ‘y’ sound;

however, they should be beginning to learn to use these sounds in words. Your child should be

able to follow three step instructions and understand time related concepts such as ‘now’,

‘before’ and ‘after’. Your child should be able to follow an instruction without too much

‘thinking’ time or need to stop what they are doing to listen. They should be able to recognise

some letters and numbers, particularly the letters in their name and the number that corresponds with their age. Children should be able to tell a story you can follow along with,

that has a beginning, middle and an end. Sentences should be well formed, and a child should be

able to use words such as ‘went’ or ‘will go’. Your child should be able to answer ‘wh’ questions

and will be asking a lot of questions themselves! They should be using words such as ‘and’ and

‘because’ to make their sentences longer. Your child should be able to share, take turns, and

begin to resolve conflict within play without an adult’s support.

Speech pathology services in Mildura:

Most services do not require a referral from a General Practitioner (GP), however it is

encouraged to discuss your child’s development with your GP. Your GP can also ‘activate’ a

Medicare plan, that can help cover the cost of some of your appointments.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is a scheme that values and priorities early

intervention. The Early Childhood Approach provides funding to assist children experiencing a

Prep Unit News

Welcome back to Term 4! We are looking forward to a very busy term ahead! This week has seen the Prep students return to school rested and refreshed and ready to continue with our learning. In class we have been exploring ‘half’ and ‘whole’ in Math. Half and whole of shapes and numbers. We have been creating the beginning, middle and end of stories that we are writing from pictures.

Sounds to continue practising with your child/ren at home: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, r, f, o, c, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ll, ff, ss, sh, ee, qu, z, ch, y, v, x, wh and th.
Learn all the tricky words at the back of the reading diary.
Library day is Monday however due to change with Mrs Collins timetable ALL prep students need to return their library books each FRIDAY.
Show and tell reminder for this coming Thursday = even week.

Cooinda and Wahroonga are preparing for their turn at hosting an assembly. Cooinda’s

assembly will be on Friday 14th October and Wahroonga the following Friday. Please remember to practise the students’ assembly words every night after they do their reading.

For Mission Month, the Prep Unit is going to be holding a ‘Guess the lollies in the Jar’. Students are able to purchase a guess for 50 cents, or 3 for $1. The competition will begin on Week 3 (Monday 17th October) and the winners will be announced on Wednesday 26th October. All proceeds will be going to the overseas Missions.

Junior Unit News

Welcome back to the final term of the year. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing all about the students memorable holiday moments and are looking forward to creating more exciting memories throughout this term.

Mrs Pacher has asked for Year One students to bring in a plastic bottle with a lid for Science next week. We have some at school but if families have any that they could send in that would be very helpful.

We welcome 3rd year Latrobe students Elizabeth Rowe and Sarah Valente who will be enhancing their teaching skills over the next few weeks.

As we begin Mission Month, we thank Mrs Gurthrie and Mrs Carmichael for sharing their experiences in Peru with the Junior Unit students. We saw images of where our fundraising efforts have been spent and what the communities are working towards. Students have many opportunities throughout the month to support our fundraising efforts through the sale of Icy Poles (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday), Hot Dog and Ice cream lunch, Slime Fest and unit fundraising efforts.

Junior Unit students will be participating in ‘GUESS THE LOLLIES’ in the lolly jar beginning in Week 3 (Monday 17th) and it will be drawn on Wednesday 26th October. Each guess will cost .50c.
Students are invited to participate in CRAZY HAIR DAY on Tuesday 18th October as a Junior Unit Fundraiser. To participate, they are asked to bring along a gold coin donation and are to wear their regular School Uniform on the day.

Science Immersion Day

This week Middle Unit students completed some fantastic learning about Living and Nonliving things as part of our Science Immersion Days this week.

For Mission Month the Middle Unit will be having a Crazy Sock Day, where students can wear a pair of funky socks with their normal school uniform (including school shoes) This will be held on Wednesday the 19th of October (Week 3) and we ask all students to please bring along a gold coin donation.

Senior Unit News

Welcome back to the final term of the 2022 school year. We trust everyone had a lovely break and is looking forward to the term ahead..

Homework

Year 5 - Homework will continue this term, as does Homeworkopoly. Homework books will be sent home each Monday and due back on Friday. Starting from Week 2, your child will have a sheet with instructions (instead of the learning portal we had last term.) Weekly spelling tests will continue each Friday.

Please also ensure that your child reads at home each night and records this in their diary. We ask that you sign their diary each night.

Year 6 - Students have started homework this week. This will be handed out to students each Monday and is due back, completed, each Friday. Students will commence Literature Circle groups next week. Students will be expected to complete reading at home for this each night. It is really important for your child to complete this reading so they can fully engage in their group’s conversation about the book. If you have any questions about this, please contact your child’s teacher.

Mission Month Fundraisers

Lolly Jar - Students will have the opportunity to participating in ‘GUESS THE LOLLIES’ in the lolly jar beginning in Week 4 (Monday 25th). The cost will be 50c per guess or 3 guesses for $1. The winner will be announced on Friday 28th October.

Movie & Popcorn/chip Day – On Thursday 20th of October the Senior Unit will be hosting a Movie Day. The students are asked to contribute a cold coin donation as their entry fee. Small packets of popcorn and chips will be available to purchase for 50c each during the viewing of the movie.

Library

Scholastic Book Club Issue #7 has been sent home. This is a great time to purchase some wonderful Christmas books! When ordering through the LOOP online ordering system, click “Gift order” and these orders will be left at the office for you to collect rather than sending home with the students. We will hopefully be able to have one more order later in the term but please be aware that in the past we have had difficulties with deliveries and there may be delays in delivering Issue #8.
