Welcome to our last newsletter for Term One! Where has it gone? My sincerest thanks to all students, staff and parents who have worked in close partnership over the past term. Every effort is greatly appreciated.

Enrolment processes have commenced for new Prep students in 2022 at Sacred Heart.  We are currently taking enrolment applications. We have changed enrolment processes with an aim to strengthen students' transition into school.  With the school being limited to only two class groupings in 2022 we encourage families to hand in their Application for Enrolment form before 21st May.  Advertising in the newspaper and television will be promoting enrolment in our Sunraysia Catholic schools over April and May. Below is our process for enrolment:

• 1st April: Enrolment Applications are open.
• Tuesday 4th, Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th May at 9:30am, 12:30pm & 6pm: Guided Learning Walk to see facilities and learning at the school.  This is a great opportunity for prospective or existing families to see learning at Sacred Heart.
• Friday 21st May: ‘Application for Enrolment’ closes and needs to be emailed to office@shmildura.catholic.edu.au  or handed in at the School Office.
  

• Monday 10th-Friday 28th May: In groups for an enrolment interview that takes around 40 minutes for prospective students and a parent, parents or guardian. Parents will be contacted to arrange a meeting time after the Enrolment Application Form is received.  Parents will meet with Mr O’Callaghan or myself and students in a small group with a teacher to do some activities.
• Friday 11th June:  Enrolment acceptance letters will be sent out.

We have advertised for a Learning Support Officer position.  If anyone knows of anyone who may be interested in this position please forward the information below.  Thank you!

In our first week of Term Two classes will be painting their Journey Pole that is located on the edge of the oval on 12th Street.  Painting these poles has been a tradition at Sacred Heart since 2010 when classes were “gifted” their own totem/journey pole as part of our NAIDOC celebrations.  The poles symbolise what is “precious” and “sacred” to each of our classes.  Each year our poles are painted over with a plain colour and then get painted on the top with the new design.  What is on the pole is there always but is just hidden from view.  Our very special poles are blessed each year as part of our NAIDOC celebrations.  I look forward to seeing the completed designs at the end of our first week next term.

Thank you to Myalla for hosting today’s Assembly.  Eumeralla is hosting our Assembly in the first week of Term Two, which will begin at 2.30pm in the Stadium on Friday.

On the first Wednesday of next term Barramunga will be participating in the Parish Mass at the church.  Students will do some of the readings and jobs throughout the Mass.  This celebration will begin at 9.30am and parents are welcome to attend. 

We have our next School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting occurring on Tuesday 20th April from 5.15pm.  This is in our first week of next term. 

Due to the limited space in Nangare’s classroom we have today moved Nangare into the space we have used this term for Digital Technology.  From the start of term two Nangare will learn from this new space and Digital Technology will move into the class space Nangare used this term.

Any Year Six parents who plan to send their child to St Joseph’s College in 2022 need to be aware that enrolment applications close on Friday 23rd April.  This is at the end of the first week of next term.

We have employed Mrs Samantha Lowe into our Arts position for Term Two.  Samantha has worked at St Joseph’s College Mildura as an Arts teacher for six years.  Throughout next term we will have a focus on the Visual Arts for our program.  We thank Mrs Gunn’s for taking on this role in Term One and wish her and her husband Lewis all the best as she commences maternity leave. We look forward to hearing some exciting news in the near future.  

Thank you to the families and staff who turned up to the Palm Sunday Parish Mass.  We had students bringing up Palm Sunday banners at the beginning of Mass and singing in the choir.  Your participation was much appreciated.

Congratulations to all students who represented the school with Division Rugby this week.  It was great to hear that the students displayed outstanding behaviour and were great sports.  We entered girls and boys teams in the Grade 3/4 and Grade 5/6 competitions.

Congratulations to our girls cricket team who played last Friday at the Aero Ovals.  

We have a few important reminders to consider about local residents and safety of students and families before and after school.  A reminder to all using the ‘Kiss & Go’ process to follow all the rules including; entry into the ‘Kiss & Go’ is only permitted via Olive Grove, no ‘U’-turns at anytime out of this area, do not leave your vehicle at anytime and please do not be talking on mobile phones while in the ‘Kiss & Go’ area. If parents are collecting students from Olive Grove at the end of a school day it is important that they only park in allocated car parking spaces and not in front of resident driveways.  Thank you for your cooperation.

With Easter almost upon us, thanks for your support across our first term. May your Easter be faith filled and a safe family time together. Rejoice in the Risen Lord.

Religious Education News

Sacrament of Confirmation

Information regarding the Sacrament of Confirmation has been sent home with all Year 5 & 6 students.  Any parents wishing to register their child for this Sacrament must do so prior to the Parent Information Evening which is being held at the church on Wednesday, 21st April 2021.  The blue registration form needs to be filled out and payment can be made at the Parish Office (cash required as there is no eftpos).  Please contact Ryan O’Callaghan at school or the Parish Office (0428272065) if you have any questions regarding this Sacrament.

Project Compassion

We appreciate those families that have been able to support this year’s Project Compassion.  Project Compassion boxes can be handed in to the front office at school by this today or in the first week of term two.

Learning Diversity & Wellbeing News

NDIS Planning Workshop - Amaze together with the Mildura Rural City Council will be hosting a free workshop on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and Autism on Wednesday 21st April, 9am-12pm, Benetook Room B - Alfred Deakin Centre, Mildura. Learning & Teaching News

Last week the staff were treated to some highly engaging professional learning by writing extraordinaire, Misty Adoniou. She encouraged staff to bring back the thrill of writing, skills when writing and will to write. All staff found this experience very beneficial and have begun constructing new units of writing following Misty’s guidelines. We hope this enthusiasm is transferred to our students and know there will be some exciting written pieces to come! 

The Year 5 and 6 students completed the first Olympiad last week. The 29 students had 30 minutes to complete 5 mathematical questions. All students did well with some impressive results from Jack Brown, Max Fleri and Thomas O’Callaghan. The next Olympiad will take place in Week 3 next term. 

The Year 1 students were treated to an energetic maths experience this week.  The Maths Olympiad students planned maths games to help the year 1s to consolidate their learning for the term. The Senior students lead the children in a variety of activities around counting, place value, basic number facts and time. It was a very enjoyable experience for all with many great conversations around their learning and the building of relationships between our students.

Prep Unit News

Congratulations to the Prep students and their families on the successful first term of school. The students have settled in to school really well and participated in a fantastic term of learning.

During the holiday break, we encourage the children to continue reading and to access their Reading Eggs account. They may like to go into the Reading Eggs "Playroom" and discover the variety of games available.

This last week of school the Prep students have had a great time participating in STEM activities based on the Fairy Tales ‘The Three Little Pigs’, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’.  The students had a fantastic time being creative and showing their amazing imaginations!

We hope all families have a happy, safe and relaxing Easter break. See you in term 2!

Junior Unit News

Congratulations to the Junior Unit students and their families on your participation, effort and achievements throughout this term. We are all grateful for their energy, enthusiasm and passion for learning. It has been our absolute pleasure getting to know our students and their families.

If there are any parents/grandparents of Kyema Students that are able to assist from 9.30-10.30 for Literacy, please contact Kim Taylor.

Middle Unit News

As part of our Integrated Studies unit on Rights, Rules and Responsibilities, students in the Middle Unit this week were very lucky to get to listen to our local Mayor Mr Jason Modica speak. This was a hard hitting interview with our very own Mrs Johnson, an event called ‘Q & A with Mrs J’. Students got to hear how Mr Modica became Mayor, why he wanted to be a Mayor and why he loves living in a democracy. Our Class Captains also had the opportunity to ask Mr Modica a question on behalf of their class. A very big thank you to Mr Modica for making time to come and speak to our students and huge thank you must also go to Mrs Johnson for her organisation and hosting efforts.

A very big thank you and well done to all students in the Middle Unit for their hard work during Term 1! We hope all families have a happy and holy Easter and enjoy a restful break.

Senior Unit News

Year Six Immersion Day Reflection

On Thursday and Friday of Week Eight, the Year 6’s participated in two Science Immersion Days. On Thursday we learnt about biomes, we played a game where we created our own biomes and we wrote about them in our work booklet. We also did a grass experiment where we put grass seeds in different environments to see which conditions it grows best in. We completed a research project on the rainforest biome. At the end of the day, we conducted a growing yeast experiment where Mr Barbery called up people to put yeast and sugar into water of different temperatures to see which was the best condition to grow the most yeast.

On Friday we conducted a blubber experiment where we put a lot of lard on one finger and a little bit of lard on another finger to see which finger we could keep in the freezing cold water the longest. It was really fun but the lard smelled terrible and took forever to get off. This showed us how some animals use their blubber to survive in freezing conditions.  After that we watched some videos about meerkats and how they have adapted to survive in the desert.

The Year Five and Six teachers have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the students this Term. Well done on your hard work and dedication throughout this term. We hope you and your families enjoy a well earned break and a happy easter. We look forward to coming together again in Term Two.

Student Leadership Groups

A big thank you to our core SLT for their enthusiasm and commitment to their leadership role during Term One. Term Two will see the team represent our school at the ANZAC Day Service, lead their sports teams at the Cross Country, and plan for and implement various school activities and projects. Thank you also for setting up for and selling icy poles during Term One, something that the whole school has enjoyed. 

Thank you also to the PLAY leaders who have planned for and organised various minor games during lunch breaks throughout the term. Fifteen Year Five students will be given the opportunity to apply to be a PLAY leader during Term Two. This process will be explained at a later date.

General News

Cross Country

Our Sacred Heart Primary School Cross Country will be running on the second Wednesday of Term 2, the 28th of April. We are looking forward to this event after missing out in 2020.  The information below has been sent home as a paper copy to students today.

Library News

Scholastic Book Club Issue #2 orders have been sent home and we are hoping that the remaining back orders from Issue #1 will arrive before the end of the day today. Australia Post has had some delays with delivery and Scholastic also had delays with stock arriving from overseas. Hopefully next term these issues will be sorted out.

Next term in week 2 we are very excited to be hosting resident author Phil Kettle and his illustrator friend and colleague Marc McBride. Phil has written many novels for children including Too Cool, Our Australia, I Can Be, and many others. Marc has illustrated numerous books, including the Delta Quest series and the new Emily Rodda novel,The Glimme. Phil and Marc will speak to all the children then workshop some writing and illustrating ideas with middles and senior students. We are very excited to be hosting Phil and Marc! Look out for more information early next term!

Imperial Football & Netball Club NetSetGo

Imps FNC NetSetGO  is the official netball starter program for children born in 2013 – 2015. It’s a chance to learn the netball basics, get outside and make some friends.

The fun will commence @ Brian Weightman Oval (No. 1 Oval) on Wednesday 21st April at 4:30pm finishing at 5:15pm and go for 10 weeks with the last session scheduled for Wednesday June 23rd.
