ISSUE 26: 22nd August, 2025
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of the “narrow door,” reminding us that the path of discipleship is not always the easiest, but it is the most life-giving. The narrow door is found in the everyday choices we make to love, forgive, and serve with generosity. As parents, these daily actions become a living example for our children, showing them how faith is not just about words but about the way we live. When we model compassion and perseverance, we help our families walk together in hope and trust through that narrow door into God’s Kingdom.

This Week at Sacred Heart
Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
It’s been another busy and memorable week at Sacred Heart!
On Tuesday, our boys netball team represented the school proudly at the School Sports Victoria Netball competition. The boys did an amazing job going through to the grand final and losing by one goal.
Today, Book Week brought colour and joy to our school. The creativity in costumes was fantastic, and it was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm from students and families. Thank you to Mrs Pacher for her organisation and planning of this special day.
We also conducted a successful lockdown practice drill as part of our Work, Health & Safety protocols on Monday. Students moved calmly and quickly from the yard into classrooms, practising how to respond safely in emergencies such as extreme weather or unsafe situations.
Thank you to our students, staff, and families for another week of teamwork, creativity, and care. Sacred Heart continues to be a place where our community learns, grows, and shines together.

School Advisory Council (SAC)
Our third SAC Meeting for 2025 will be held this Tuesday evening, beginning at 5:15 pm. We extend our gratitude to our 2025 parent representatives: Racheal Fyfe, Melissa Waters, Warren Henderson, Ben Tallent, Ben Chatfield, and Katie McCoy. Paper copies of agendas will be sent home on Monday.
School Athletics Day
Join us at the Aerodrome Ovals on Wednesday, 27th August, for a day filled with fun, competition, and school spirit.
Key details:
- Drop-off at the Aerodrome Ovals (Athletics Track) from 8:15am.
- Events run from 9am to 3:10pm, with pick-up at 3:10pm.
- Students should wear their Sacred Heart Sports Uniform with their House polo shirt.
- Bring snacks, lunch, and a water bottle.
- Students attending Camp Australia or catching the bus will be transported back to school at 3:15pm.
- Dress for the weather, and while taking photos, please respect others’ privacy.
- Shippy’s Coffee Van will be available for adults on the day. This will only have cash sales available.
We encourage all children to take part in the event. To make participation more inclusive, we are updating the scoring system:
- Only the top four placegetters in each event will have their scores recorded.
- All other participants will now earn one point for their house team, so every effort counts.
- Students will no longer be awarded points based on their performance standards.
- House team totals will be calculated using this new system, meaning participation directly supports your team.
- Event placegetters will now be recognised with a ribbon.
A special thank you to our SAC parent representative, Ben Tallent, who has worked with us to develop these changes and ensure the event is welcoming and inclusive for all students.
We look forward to your support in making this a memorable day for our students!
Athletics Presentation Assembly
Our next Assembly is at 2:30pm on Friday, where we will present awards from Wednesday's Athletics Carnival.
Father’s Day Stall
Our Father’s Day Stall is being held on Friday 5th September. Classes will be called to shop for a $5 gift for Mum during this time. Payments can be made through CDF Pay or in cash. Parent helpers are needed from 8:30am to 11am. Contact the office to volunteer your time. We thank parents Erin Hurley & Courtney Henderson for coordinating the stall.
Student Drop Off
To ensure student safety, we ask that drop-offs occur after 8:19 am, as many students are unsupervised before then at the front of the school. Additionally, please ensure that students do not drink warm or hot beverages while walking into school. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe environment for everyone.
Names on Jumpers
Please ensure all jumpers are clearly labelled with your child's name to prevent them from being lost. This helps save money and makes it easier to return misplaced items. Thank you for your cooperation!
School Hats
Please make sure children start bringing their school hats back, as they will need to wear them during lunch and recess starting from 1st September.
Foundation 2026 Enrolments – Still Open
We still have places available for Foundation in 2026! If you know of any families thinking about joining Sacred Heart, please encourage them to get in touch and enrol soon. We’d be delighted to welcome them into our caring and vibrant school community.

God Bless!
Mr Mark Gibson

Learning and Teaching
What’s going on in a student’s mind when they hit a roadblock in maths? Do they freeze? Push through blindly? Or stop to reflect, rethink, and try a new approach?
That last response—pausing to evaluate and adjust—isn’t automatic. It’s a learned skill called metacognition, and it can make a powerful difference in how students learn and succeed.
Metacognition, often described as “thinking about thinking,” is the awareness and regulation of one’s own cognitive processes. It plays a critical role in effective learning, particularly in helping students become more independent, resilient, and adaptable thinkers. When students understand how they learn, not just what they learn, they’re better equipped to tackle unfamiliar problems, persist through challenges, and evaluate their progress.
Research shows that metacognitive strategies can significantly boost student achievement. According to the Education Endowment Foundation, teaching metacognitive skills can accelerate learning by up to seven months. This impact is even greater when students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through guided reflection and goal setting.
Metacognition supports:
- Self-regulation: Students learn to set goals, plan their approach, monitor their understanding, and adjust when needed.
- Problem-solving: Learners are more likely to evaluate strategies and switch tactics when stuck.
- Confidence: Reflecting on what they know (and don’t know yet) helps students feel more in control.
- Resilience: Students who practise metacognition are more likely to persist through difficulties because they can identify the source of the challenge and adjust accordingly.
In subjects like maths, where conceptual understanding is built over time, metacognitive skills help students connect prior knowledge to new content and apply it meaningfully.
By equipping students with the tools to reflect, plan and adjust, this helps build more than just maths skills. It supports the development of lifelong learners who are confident, independent, and ready to face new challenges with a thoughtful approach. Teaching metacognition is about enhancing what you already do by making students more aware of their thinking and giving them the tools to grow through it.
SWPBS
Our SWPBS focus this week will be on Breakfast Club expectations

- Sit down while eating – For safety and respect, please stay seated while enjoying your breakfast.
- Take one sandwich at a time (maximum two per student) – Start with one sandwich, and if you're still hungry, you may take a second.
Schools TV
In this edition of SchoolTV - Anxiety & Young People
Anxiety is a natural and expected part of growing up. In fact, it plays an important role in helping young people prepare for challenges, stay alert to potential dangers and adapt to new situations. It can motivate them to study for a test, practise before a performance, or tread carefully in unfamiliar settings. However, for many children and adolescents today, anxiety can shift from being a helpful response to becoming intense, persistent and disruptive.
The world young people are growing up in is fast-paced and often demanding. Academic pressures, social expectations, family changes and the constant presence of digital media, can all contribute to heightened stress and worry.
When anxiety is left unrecognised or unsupported, it can begin to affect a young person's wellbeing, learning, friendships and self-confidence. That's why it's so important for adult carers to understand how anxiety may present in children. Everyone experiences anxiety differently, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution.
This edition of SchoolTV raises awareness and provides families with practical strategies to help young people manage anxiety in healthy, constructive ways.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Reminder - The second hand uniform shop is open during assembly times, which is fortnightly (the shop can be found in the stadium next to the stage) - eftpos and cash welcome. You can place your order in advance using the link below. You will get a text message from the school when it is ready.
Foundation News
What a great day we had today for our Book Week celebration. Students had a dress-up parade today in the stadium to show off all of our costumes.

This week in Foundation, we have been exploring Ordinal numbers. This has been exciting as we have been making connections between Mathematics and preparation for Athletics Day, which we have been training for. In Literacy, we have learnt two new digraphs (two letters that make one sound) /wh/ and /th/. These can be added to our bank of sounds that we can practise reading and writing.
Reminder about Lunches and Lunch Orders
Just a friendly reminder that students only have 15 minutes of supervised eating time for lunch. Please make sure your child’s lunch is something they can finish within this timeframe. We have noticed that some students are taking longer than the allocated 15 minutes, which unfortunately cuts into valuable learning time. Thank you for your support in helping us make the most of our school day.
Reminders:
- Library bags at school every day
- Diaries are to be signed each night a book is being read (both reader and comprehension books)
- ALL jumpers to be labelled- we have a lot of jumpers in lost property with no names
- Show and Tell topic is ‘Something made from plastic, metal, wood, or fabric’ (only 1 item)
- Next Wednesday is our first Athletics Day at the Aerodrome Ovals. Students wear their house coloured shirts. Drop off and pick up will happen at the oval, so there is no need to bring library bags on this day. Parents/friends are welcome to join us and watch participation in events, but students are to stay with their classroom teachers/group leader for the day

Year One News

Performing Arts
For our upcoming school concert Indiana Joan: Raiders of the Lost Relics, the Year 1 students will be performing On Top of the World by Imagine Dragon. To capture the vibrant spirit of the song, we’d love the students to wear a blue dragon T-shirt with plain white bottoms (pants, shorts, or a skirt). To keep this an easy and affordable option, Mr Barbary has found a t-shirt on Temu for under $6, an image has been sent to you earlier in the week to assist you. The performance will be recorded in Week 8 of this term.
Costumes don’t need to be expensive - the focus is on colour, energy and fun. If you need help finding something suitable, please let us know and we’ll be happy to assist.
Thank you for your support in making this performance come alive!
Mr Barbary
Year Two News
Congratulations Nangare on an awesome Book Week assembly! Mrs Collins, Mrs Garzon and Miss Zanoni are very proud of you!
Nangare would like to thank Mrs Garzon for teaching in our classroom over the last month. Mrs Garzon has been an asset to our year level and we wish her all the best on her journey to finish her Masters in Teaching.
During Book Week, the Year 2 students have been reading some of the shortlisted books in the CBCA awards. After looking at the information book, Flora, we ventured out to our Sacred Heart garden to sketch some flowers! We saw some stunning daffodils and roses that show us that Spring is getting closer and that Mr Carmichael is doing a great job looking after our gardens! Check out the amazing and detailed artwork the children have produced!

For our school concert Indiana Joan: Raiders of the Lost Relics, Year 2 will perform Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles. Students are asked to wear Egyptian-style costumes, such as Cleopatra or queens, pharaohs, or mummies. Base colours like white, beige, black, or gold work well, with gold jewellery, cuffs, collars, sashes, or headpieces adding extra detail. Scarves, tea towels, or cardboard covered in gold foil make great crowns or collars, and for mummies, strips of fabric or old sheets can be wrapped over clothing while still allowing easy movement.
Costumes can be simple, inexpensive, and DIY. Please let us know if you need help sourcing items.
Mr Corey Barbary, Performing Arts.
Year Three News
We have had another wonderful and busy week in Year Three! Students thoroughly enjoyed their excursion to see The Velveteen Rabbit at the Mildura Arts Centre.
We also had a fantastic day today celebrating Book Week, dressing in costume and participating in the parade.
Congratulations to our Year Three Semester Two Class Captains: Sienna D (Narooma) and Poppy Z (Dourim)!
Reminders:
- Wednesday, 27th August – Athletics Day at the Aero Ovals.
Performing Arts:
As part of our upcoming school concert, Indiana Joan: Raiders of the Lost Relics, Year 3 students will be performing the iconic song “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.
To help create the spooky atmosphere of the performance, students will be dressing as zombies. We ask that you please provide your child with old, torn clothing to wear on the day of recording, which will be during Week 8 of this term. Clothes can be dark or neutral tones and should look a little worn or “zombie-like.” Please ensure the costume is comfortable and suitable for dancing.
If you don’t have suitable clothing, please let us know as soon as possible, and we can help with alternative options.
Thank you for your support in making this performance come alive!
Mr Barbary
Have a wonderful weekend
Sarah and Jaimi
Year Four News
What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 4 reading and doing activities around some of the short listed books for Children’s Book Week. Thank you to all who made an effort to dress up in their favourite characters. It was great to see all the wonderful costumes shown in our parade today. Photos??
A message from Mr Barbary- Performing Arts: For our upcoming school concert, Indiana Joan: Raiders of the Lost Relics, Year 4 students will be performing the song “Snow” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
To complement the performance, students will be dressing in white clothing along with a coloured beanie and scarf of their choice. Please provide your child with comfortable white tops and bottoms, plus a colourful beanie and scarf to add a fun pop of colour on stage. We will be recording your child's performance during Week 8 of this term.
If you have any difficulties sourcing these items, please contact me for assistance.
Today, our Semester Two captains Billie (Myalla) and Ivy (Illawarra) were presented with their badges at Assembly. Well done to both girls.

An email was sent from Mr Barbary with further details. Filming will occur during Week 8.
ITALIAN Year 5/6 Shared Lunch
Mrs Slimmon and Mrs Campbell’s classes:
Students this term are working on designing their own Italian inspired cafe. To celebrate our learning, students will participate in a shared lunch in Week 7 on Wednesday 3rd of September.
Students will be asked to bring a plate to share with their peers. If what is brought is Italian inspired, then great! But we are very conscious of how busy everyone is so a plate of anything would still be very much appreciated!
The session will run in the first 2 hours of the day, meaning the students will have an early lunch of 10:30am.
The other two classes will participate in this next term.
UPCOMING DATES:
Wednesday 27th August – SHPS Athletics Day
Tuesday 2nd September – Division Athletics
Wednesday 3rd September – Waminda Italian Cafe
Friday 5th September – Father’s Day Stall
Friday 12th September – AFL Day

School Hats
It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch. Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating. Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.
Shoes
Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school. The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes. There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration. Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.
Socks
Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys. Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.
School Uniform Purchase
The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).
Second Hand Uniform Shop
The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school. An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .
School Bags
School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.
Library Bags
All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.
Lost Property
Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.
Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up
Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.
Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:
- Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
- Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.
Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.
Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

Pick Up and Drop Off Points
In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.
Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay. This app is powered by Flexischools and you will need to create an account. Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).
OFFICE INFORMATION
Office Hours

Simon Everywhere and Parent Access Module (PAM)
Simon Everywhere is an App for smart phones that allows parents to access all information relating to their child/ren such as reports, attendance and much more. It also allows you to update medical information, give permission for excursions, access teacher emails and also receive notifications from the school.
For parents familiar with PAM, the new App works mostly the same as PAM and you can still access PAM through the web site: pam.shmildura.catholic.edu.au, however the app has additional functionality such as Push notifications and the ability to sign in without having to enter your username and password each time.
- Go to the App Store or Google Play Store and search Simon Everywhere
- Download and open the App and Allow Notifications
- Enter your name and phone number and press verify, you will receive a code via SMS
- Click on 'Add School'
- Select Sacred Heart Primary School, Mildura - Parent Access
- Enter your PAM username and password. If you do not know your credentials, please call the school.
Click on the Home icon.
Simon everywhere works best when notifications are turned on. You can check the notifications setting on your phone to be sure by going to the Settings – Notifications – Then find the Simon Everywhere App.
