Principal Message

Gospel Reflection

This Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost—the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, filling them with courage, wisdom, and the ability to speak many languages so they could share the Good News with the world. It's often called the "birthday of the Church" because it marks the moment the disciples truly began their mission.

As parents and carers, Pentecost reminds us of the importance of listening for the quiet guidance of the Spirit in our lives—especially in the way we nurture, teach, and model faith for our children. May this Pentecost renew our hearts with peace, hope, and the strength to be loving witnesses in our families and school community.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,

This Week at Sacred Heart

What a full and faith-filled week it’s been at Sacred Heart!

Last weekend, our Confirmation candidates celebrated an important milestone in their faith journey. Congratulations to all students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation—we are so proud of the courage, joy, and reverence you brought to this special occasion. Thank you to the families, sponsors, and staff who supported their preparation and celebrated alongside them.

Today our staff participated in a Pupil Free Day dedicated to school improvement planning. With our review coming up in August, the day gave us the chance to reflect on our strengths and identify areas for growth that will shape our next chapter at Sacred Heart.

As part of our Mission Month efforts, students are taking turns across the term to fundraise for Fr. Michael McKinnon’s missionary work—thank you for your support and generosity.  Classes and units have done many activities across this week.

Well done to our Year 6 Rock band and Folk Group students who performed at the  Mildura Eisteddfod today. The Folk Group picking up 1st prize and the Rock Band an Honourable Mention.

King’s Birthday Long Weekend

The school will be closed on Monday for the King’s Birthday public holiday.

2025 Mildura Eisteddfod

The 2025 Mildura Eisteddfod is officially underway, and it’s fantastic to see so many of our Sacred Heart students showcasing their talents across a range of events. This annual celebration of the performing arts runs throughout June, and we are proud to be entering several school performances.

A special shout-out to Theo Johnston (piano), Federico Leal-Kaiser (piano), Rosie Cavallo (monologue solo), Juno Walker (monologue solo) and Hudson Rodi (piano)—whose participation highlighted the theme “The motivation to achieving excellence”. Their delivery were a fitting reward for the time and effort they put into preparing. Well done!

We look forward to cheering on many more of our students in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for further results and celebrations in our next newsletter!

Mission Month – Fundraising with Purpose Across the Year

In 2025, we’re taking a more balanced approach to our fundraising efforts by spreading them out across the year, rather than concentrating everything in October. Each class will have one or two opportunities before the end of this term to fundraise in support of our missions, helping students stay engaged and allowing families to contribute meaningfully without feeling overwhelmed.

As always, all funds raised will go toward supporting Fr. Michael McKinnon’s missionary work overseas. Money raised will be presented in October.  Thank you for your continued generosity and for helping our students live out their faith through action.

School Assembly Dourim

Year Three Dourim will host our Assembly at 2:30pm on Friday. Following the assembly, Dourim parents are welcome to join an afternoon tea in their child's classroom, offering an opportunity to view student learning and to mingle and meet other parents.

Foundation 2026 Enrolments – Still Open

While the official enrolment period for Foundation 2026 closed Friday, May 30th at 4pm, we will remain open for applications beyond this date as we have not yet filled all available places. We encourage current families to apply via the school website if they haven’t already done so. If you know of any new families considering Sacred Heart for their child, please pass this information along—we’d love to welcome them into our school community.

God Bless!

Mr Mark Gibson

Lost Property:

The pile of jumpers is growing and actually the tubs of jumpers and jackets are overflowing! Each week I go through them to find jumpers that are named and then return them to the owners however there are so many that are not named! If your child is missing a jumper or needs a spare, please send them to the Lost Property area to collect one. They are welcome to take a jumper that is not named, bring it home to get it washed and named. Thanks Chris

Missions

Second Hand book sale. This sale will start in Week 9 on Monday 16th June and will be accessible for all children in our school. At this stage we have not received any donations of children’s books but hope that the upcoming long weekend will give families a chance to look through their books and perhaps send a few into the Mootwingee or Nangare classrooms. Thanks in anticipation.

Learning & Teaching

End of Semester Reports

Teachers are currently working hard to prepare students’ end-of-semester reports. This is a significant task that involves assessing each student’s level of achievement. These reports will be available on SIMON Everywhere on Friday, June 27, with Parent Teacher Interviews scheduled for the following week.

We would also like to remind you about the changes to the Mathematics reporting for 2025. As part of the implementation of the updated Victorian Curriculum, all schools are required to adjust how Mathematics is reported in Semester 1, 2025. These changes are designed to provide clearer, more detailed information about your child’s progress and achievement in key areas of mathematics. More information about these updates can be found in the attached letter, which has also been emailed to all families this week.

Seesaw Digital Learning Portfolios

Have you recently checked your child’s digital learning portfolio on Seesaw? Take a moment to log in, review their work, and leave a comment to let your child know what you think! If you’re having any issues accessing your Seesaw parent account, please contact your child’s teacher for assistance.

Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast club has been very popular on these cold mornings! A reminder that Breakfast club runs on Tuesday and Thurday mornings before school from our canteen.

PSG Meetings

This term PSG meetings for students receiving substantial and extensive adjustments across the school will occur on June 25th & 26th. PSG meetings for students receiving supplementary adjustments will occur at a time scheduled by the classroom teacher throughout the term. This may be in person or via phone.

SWPBS

This year we would like to review the values, behaviours and expectations of our school Matrix to ensure it remains current to our needs. Parent feedback is very important in reviewing these expectations. Please take the time to complete the following survey to assist with this review. SWPBS Matrix Review

Our SWPBS focus this week is “Being and good role model & Friend”

Being a Good Friend at School

Celebrate Differences

Everyone’s brain is different—and that’s awesome! Be kind and curious about how others like to talk, play, or hang out.

Practice Consent & Boundaries

Always ask first. Respect when someone says “no” or needs space.

Be Flexible & Patient

Plans change. People have different needs. That’s okay! Understanding helps friendships grow.

Use Inclusive Communication

Friendship can be talking, drawing, smiling, waving, or just sitting together. All ways are valid.

Lift Each Other Up

Say kind things, cheer for your friends, and notice what they do well.

When Friendship Feels Hard

It’s okay if a friendship doesn’t work out. Talk to a trusted adult, set boundaries, and remember—you deserve kindness and respect.

Learning Diversity

Foundation News

The hard work continues in Foundation this week with new sounds added to our knowledge bank. The sounds you will need to be continually practising at home are: m, s, t, a, p, i, n, f, r, o, c, h, d, e, g, l, k and the tricky words: I, the, my, a, is. We have also been creating our own sentences using our sounds and some tricky words. Practising writing at home will greatly benefit all students' learning (emphasising the importance of punctuation)- Nat sat in the tin, Sam is in the mud, Pat is in the pit. We have been exploring fragments and sentences in Literacy.

Now that the weather is getting colder, here is a reminder of what our students need to wear regarding winter school uniforms.

Reminders:

  • School starts at 8:45am each day. If you are at school after 8:45am you must sign your child in at the office.
  • Your child’s library bag needs to be at school every day - kept in their school bag.
  • Read and record ‘Enhanced Comprehension’ and ‘Reader’ in the reading diary each night. Classroom teachers do check the student diaries.
  • Practise the sounds caterpillars and fluency chart each night.

Year One News

We warmly welcome Jaco De Wet and his family to Amaroo. Jaco has joined us from Queensland and we look forward to getting to know him better.

Literacy

This week in Literacy, we explored three different digraphs that make the same sound: ‘ir’, ‘ur’, and ‘er’, all of which make the /er/ sound. We also focused on plural rules, learning how to correctly change words from singular to plural by adding different letters depending on the ending of the word.

Below is a poster outlining the rules we’ve been learning. You can support your child by discussing these rules at home and looking for examples together during reading and writing activities.

Maths

In Maths we have been revising our  learning about 2D and 3D Shapes and learning about Position and Location. We have been giving and following directions to move people and objects to different locations within a space. We have also been learning our left and right.

Missions

Lolly Jar Guessing Competition - We are currently running the Lolly Jar Guessing Competition in our classrooms. This will be finishing on Friday the 13th of June. Year 1 children can take a guess at how many lollies are in their class jar. Each guess costs 50c, so bring your best estimating skills — and maybe a bit of sweet luck!

Crazy Socks Day - On Wednesday we celebrated our Crazy Sock Day and showed off our silliest, brightest and most outrageous socks. Thank you to everyone who donated on the day supporting our Missions in Peru. Check out our Crazy Socks!

BANJOS - Mini Savories and Donuts are now on sale. Gather your orders and place them via CDF Pay. Orders close Monday 9th June.

Reminders

  • Please ensure library bags come to school every day along with their library books. Thank you for your continued support.
  • Please continue to practise reading and writing tricky words with your child. (In the back pages of diary)
  • School starts at 8:45am each day. If you are at school after 8:45am you must sign your child in at the office.
  • Read and record your child’s ‘Reader’ in the reading diary each night. Classroom teachers do check the student diaries. Students are encouraged to write their own books in.
  • Library borrowing day is EVERY WEDNESDAY- please have all books back.

We hope everyone has a fantastic long weekend,

Katrina and Brieanna

Year Two News

Spelling Homework

We have learnt quite a few tricky words already this year. It is important  to be able to not just read these words but spell them as well. Every day we revise the tricky words and point out what makes them tricky (ie: the ‘u’ in build). Reading Diaries have these words listed in them, so when listening to the children read, it would be a great time to ask them to write some down! We have also sent home a homework sheet for some children who may need some extra practice. We ask that you follow the steps listed at the bottom of the sheet for the highlighted words. These are the ones that your child is still learning. Once completed, check that your child can spell these words and then please return the sheet to your child’s teacher.

Science

In our Science unit - Earth’s Treasures, we have been discussing renewable and nonrenewable resources, ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle, and why water is so important. After learning about the difference between salt water and fresh water, we undertook an experiment to see if we could remove salt from water! Even though we didn’t have m and your child would like to repeat the experiment at home on the next sunny day, you can find the instructions here!

The Resilience Project

During our SEL lesson this week, we discussed the emotions we may feel before and after practising mindfulness.  Being mindful is about thinking about our thoughts and feelings, focusing on our mind and body right now in the present instead of thinking about what might have happened yesterday or last week, or what might happen tomorrow or next year. When we are mindful, we feel calm and content and this helps our brains to not feel so worried or confused.
Children wrote about how they were feeling straight after recess. Then we all practiced being mindful as we went through “Yoga with Kids”. Children were then able to write how they felt after doing this yoga. There are many different mindful activities we can do to help calm ourselves down, this is just one example!

Missions

On Wednesday we held a Crazy Socks Day, to raise $$ for our Missions in Peru. There was certainly a wide variety of crazy socks worn by the children. We raised over $80 for this fundraising effort and now look forward to preparing for our Second Hand book sale. This sale will start in Week 9 on Monday 16th June. At this stage we have not received any donations of children’s books but hope that the upcoming long weekend will give families a chance to look through their books and perhaps send a few into the Mootwingee or Nangare classrooms. Thanks in anticipation.

Year Five News

In Religion we have been learning that Catholic Christians believe in one God, but there are three experiences of this one God:

God the Father

God the Son and

God the Holy Spirit

This is hard to understand, but has a special name. It is called the Trinity.

The Trinity is a mystery beyond human understanding.

God is revealed to Catholic Christians as three different ‘persons’.

One loop is labelled Father, one as Son and one as Holy Spirit.

When tracing the loop pattern, there is no beginning and no end. They are all equally sized.

God is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit - not three Gods but all the same God.

The circle in the pattern reminds Catholic Christians that God is one God and also three persons.

Students have been researching and recreating their own Trinity Knot.

A look ahead:

Monday 9th June - King's Birthday Holiday

Wednesday 18th June - Senior Unit Choir Eisteddfod

Friday 8th August - Barramunga Assembly - Term 3, Week 3

Have a great weekend.

Rachel and Jacinda.

What a fun Silly Shirt Day we had on Tuesday! It was fantastic to see everyone get involved, and all the creative shirts looked amazing. Even better, we raised some money to support our Missions—thank you to all who took part!

A reminder that if students need to bring a mobile phone to school, it must be handed in at the office upon arrival and collected at the end of the day.

We wish all our Grade 6 families a safe and enjoyable long weekend—see you next week, refreshed and ready to go!

Library

Thanks to the rewards points we have accrued from the Book Fair and Book Club sales, I have been able to purchase new decodable books for the Middle Unit as well as expanding our range of Enhanced Comprehension texts for the Junior students. This means we will have plenty of books available for students to continue practicing and developing their reading skills. We have also been able to purchase hands-on resources to support our Mathematics work.

Second Hand Book Sale:

In Week 9, myself and the Year 2 classes are running a Second Hand Book Stall as part of our school’s Mission Fundraising efforts. We need A LOT MORE books for this to be a successful, exciting opportunity for students to purchase a book to take home. We would be most grateful if families could have a look through their books and consider donating any that they no longer read.

Book donations can be given to Mrs Carmichael (Mootwingee), Mrs Collins (Nangare/The Lab) or Mrs Pacher (Library).

Books that were ordered at the Book Fair have been distributed this week. Please let me know if you have not received your order. Books for Foundation students will be handed out next week. Some books are on backorder - I believe I have notified the relevant students if this is the case.

School Hats

It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch.  Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating.  Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.

Shoes

Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school.  The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes.  There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration.  Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.

Socks

Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys.  Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.

School Uniform Purchase

The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).

Second Hand Uniform Shop

The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school.  An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .

School Bags

School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.

Library Bags

All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.

Lost Property

Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.

Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up

Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.

Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:

  • Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
  • Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.

Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.

Arriving and Leaving Safely

Kiss & Go

To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):

  • Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
  • Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
  • Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
  • Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
  • Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
  • For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.

Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

Pick Up and Drop Off Points

In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.

Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

Riding Scooters & Bikes

Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.

Collect Children from School Grounds

Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.

School Crossings

Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions.  We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.

Buses

Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.

Drop Off Times

Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided.  Our gates open at this time.

Pick Up Times

Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.

Walking or Riding Home

If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.

Alternative Pick Up Places

For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.

To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.

Brainfood

Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

Lunch Snack

The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy.  Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

Recess Snack

We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box.  You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time.  This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

Packing Food

The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

School Canteen

Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost.    The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay.  This app is powered by Flexischools and  you will need to create an account.  Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).

  1. Go to the App Store or Google Play Store and search Simon Everywhere
  2. Download and open the App and Allow Notifications
  3. Enter your name and phone number and press verify, you will receive a code via SMS

  5. Select Sacred Heart Primary School, Mildura - Parent Access
  6. Enter your PAM username and password. If you do not know your credentials, please call the school.
