ISSUE 3: 7th February, 2025
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
In this Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 5:1-11), Jesus calls Simon Peter to "put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch." Despite his doubts, Peter listens, and the result is an abundant catch of fish. Overwhelmed, he recognizes Jesus’ power and receives a new mission—to become a "fisher of people."
As parents, we too are called to trust in God, even when we feel tired or uncertain. Raising children comes with challenges, but like Peter, we are invited to have faith, step forward, and embrace the role of guiding our children in love and faith.
May this Gospel remind us to trust in God’s plan, even when the path is unclear, knowing that His grace will always provide what we need.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
What a brilliant beginning to the school year we’ve had! A huge thank you to our incredible teachers and staff for creating such a welcoming and supportive environment, and to our students for stepping into the new year with enthusiasm and positivity. It’s been wonderful to see everyone settling in so smoothly.
This past week has been a quiet one, allowing students the time to get comfortable with new routines, expectations, and friendships. These moments of calm are essential in building confidence and setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.
A special shoutout to our Year 6 students, who have been outstanding in their role as buddies, helping our younger students find their feet with kindness and patience. Your leadership and care are making a world of difference—well done!
Let’s continue to build on this strong start and make 2025 a year of growth, learning, and success for everyone.
Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day is this Tuesday, a global event uniting communities worldwide to promote safer online spaces. As technology has advanced significantly in the past two decades, bringing enormous benefits, it has also introduced risks with real-world impacts, underscoring the importance of online safety awareness. GTKY Meetings are scheduled for Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th February, starting at 3:20 pm through to 5:30pm. Please book a time via PAM (Simon Everywhere) before 1pm on Tuesday. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss their child with the teacher, and to begin fostering a strong home-school partnership. If booking issues arise, contact the School Office for assistance.
Parent Information Sheets
Organisational details for classrooms were sent home with students on Thursday. Bring any questions about this information to the Get to Know You Meetings (GTKY) with your child's teacher. Additionally, complete the GTKY Meetings questionnaire to share your child's strengths, challenges, and interests during the meeting.
Hockey Victoria Roadshow Program
Our Year 3 & 4 students will have the exciting opportunity to take part in the Hockey Victoria Roadshow Program this Tuesday! This fun and free clinic is a fantastic introduction to hockey, giving students a chance to learn the basics of this Olympic sport in a safe and engaging environment. Run in partnership with local hockey clubs, the program encourages teamwork, skill development, and a love for the game. For those interested in continuing their hockey journey, there’s also a pathway to join Hookin2Hockey, the national junior program.
Foundation Rest Day
To help our Foundation students adjust, rest days are built into the program on Wednesdays until the end of February to support their transition into school.
Beginning of Year School Mass
Join us for our Beginning of School Year Mass time has been changed to 12pm on Friday, at the Sacred Heart church. Second Hand Uniform Shop
We’re looking for parent volunteers to help run our Second-Hand Uniform Shop as part of our Parents & Friends group. This is a great way to support our school community while ensuring families have access to quality second-hand uniforms at affordable prices.
We’d love to see a team of parents come together to sort donations, organise stock, and prepare orders that come through the school. Many hands make light work, and even a small commitment of your time can make a big difference!
If you’re interested in helping out, please reach out to me directly. Your support would be greatly appreciated!

Information regarding School Photos has been distributed to families, and orders must be submitted online. Photos will take place on Monday, February 17th, with all students required to wear their full summer school uniform. Learning Diversity
Parent Support Meetings will take place in week 8 this term. Our ILP reports will be sent home for parents to review prior to these meetings. We have changed the format of our ILP reports so they will look a little different and will be accessible on SIMON.
Please ensure you have completed your Speech Consent form and Wellbeing Dog information form on PAM.
Our SWPBS support focus this fortnight is “Being Sunsmart”
As we are having a run of high temperatures, it’s important to take extra care of yourself while enjoying the sunshine, especially during school hours. The sun can be harmful to your skin, eyes, and overall health if you don’t take precautions. Here’s how to stay sunsmart and look after yourself in hot weather while at school.
UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun can damage your skin and eyes, leading to sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer over time. Children and teenagers have more delicate skin, making them more vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV radiation. Not only that, but excessive sun exposure can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, especially on scorching days. That’s why it's essential to implement sunsmart habits in school.
- Wear Protective Clothing When it's hot outside, make sure your correct school uniform and school hat. You can also wear sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the sun's rays.
- Use Sunscreen Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin before school and reapply prior to breaks or sport outside. We have sunscreen available, however, if you have an allergy please bring your own.
- Seek Shade While it’s great to enjoy outdoor activities, try to stay in shaded areas when playing outside.
- Drink Plenty of Water Hydration is key to staying healthy in the heat. Make sure to drink water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. Dehydration can sneak up on you, leading to tiredness, headaches, and dizziness. Bring a water bottle to school so you always have access to fluids.
Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illnesses It's important to recognise the signs of heat-related illness, like heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Symptoms may include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and feeling faint. If you or a friend experiences these symptoms, seek help immediately and move to a cooler environment.
The Resilience Project
This week all students will complete an introductory lesson where they will learn how to navigate their Student Journals; including the healthy habit tracker, mood tracker and GEM reflections. Students will be guided to understand the importance of interacting with and reflecting on these pages on a weekly basis.
Schools TV
In this edition of SchoolTV - Confidence & Motivation
Building confidence and motivation in young people is essential for their overall wellbeing and is a key aspect of their development. These qualities can have a lasting impact on their success and happiness. Confidence helps children believe in their abilities and face challenges with a positive attitude, while motivation drives their desire to learn, explore, and achieve their goals.
Fostering these traits involves creating an environment that encourages children to take risks, learn from their mistakes, and celebrate their achievements. Confidence is built when children feel capable and valued, while motivation is fuelled by the belief that their efforts will lead to growth and success. By actively supporting both, we can help young people thrive in the academic, social, and personal areas of their life.
By offering positive reinforcement, setting realistic expectations, and celebrating their efforts, we can model a positive mindset that can go a long way in helping young people develop both confidence and motivation. Nurturing these qualities, will help them grow into self-assured individuals who believe in their ability to succeed, setting the foundation for a fulfilling future.
In this edition of SchoolTV, discover how to provide opportunities for autonomy and support your child in persevering through challenges.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Foundation News
This week your child brought home a Foundation Information Sheet for 2025, a home QR code for Seesaw and a Get To Know You form. The Get To Know You Form needs to be completed and brought to the meeting next week. The Seesaw QR code will connect you to your child’s digital learning portfolio. In this portfolio you will be able to see examples of your child’s school work.
Over the next two weeks students will be introduced to these 7 sounds/letters S, A, T, P, I, N, M. These are the first sounds that we learn in InitiaLit. We will practise hearing these sounds in words and learn to correctly form/write the letters used to represent them.
Sound: Is what we hear. What is the 1st sound in the word sat?
Letter: Is what we see. How do we write the sound 's' in the word sat?
The Foundation Information Session will be held on Thursday 27th February @ 3.30pm in Minga. This is an important meeting to attend so that you gain an insight into how reading is taught at Sacred Heart and the expectations of home reading.
Reminder to parents to email classroom teachers through a family photo for their child’s classroom family tree:

Foundation Rest Days:
Students will have the following days/dates as a rest day from school:

Year One News
What a magnificent week we have had getting to know our Year One students.
We thank you for organising headphones, hats, drink bottles and library bags for our students. These need to be clearly labelled and at school with them EACH day.
Please ensure students are bringing brain food in a separate container each day and placing it on their desk in the morning.
We will also begin bringing home the ‘Enhanced Comprehension’ books on Monday. (Different texts, yet same style of questioning as Prep). These are borrowed every Monday and need to be returned every Friday. These texts provide a great opportunity for your child to hear how you read with fluency, add character voices and build on their comprehension and word knowledge.
Get To Know You Interviews: Yesterday your child will have brought home an information sheet regarding life in Year 2 in 2025. Together with this was a Get To Know you information sheet for you to complete about your child. Please bring these to the GTKY meetings next Tuesday or Wednesday. If you have not made an appointment with your child’s teacher, please do so on SIMON as this is an opportunity for parents to share details about your child that will benefit their learning.
Year Two News
READING: Earlier this week, the children were introduced to their Take Home books and diaries. Encourage your child to tell you about their Year 2 diary. We look forward to books and diaries coming to school each day. Reading improves children’s language and literacy skills so it is important that all children are given the opportunity to read aloud every day. Through books, children are exposed to new vocabulary, sentence structures and literary devices that they may not encounter in everyday conversations.
Next Monday children will bring home a picture story book to share with a parent to enhance their comprehension skills. This is in a plastic pocket along with a question sheet to guide parents. Please ensure the book and sheet stay together and are returned to school when finished or by Fridays.

In Year Three students will choose ‘just right’ books from the library. Thanks for your patience as we get to know each of our children academically and help them find the right fit.

We’ve currently had a number of toys coming from home. Unless you’ve made special arrangements with your child’s teacher, could you please ask your child to leave these items at home. Also, a reminder that coloured scrunchies and colourful jewellery items are not part of our school uniform. Thank you!
Your child is welcome to bring fruits and vegetables to snack on at our 9:55 brain break.

School Hats
It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch. Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating. Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.
Shoes
Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school. The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes. There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration. Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.
Socks
Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys. Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.
School Uniform Purchase
The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).
Second Hand Uniform Shop
The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school. An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .
School Bags
School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.
Library Bags
All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.
Lost Property
Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.
Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up
Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.
Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:
- Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
- Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.
Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.
Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

Pick Up and Drop Off Points
In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.
Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay. This app is powered by Flexischools and you will need to create an account. Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).
