ISSUE 32: 11th October, 2024
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
In the Gospel for the 28th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year B), Jesus challenges the rich young man to let go of his material possessions and follow Him. This invitation reminds us that true fulfilment comes not from wealth or status, but from a heart open to God's love and generosity. As parents, it encourages us to reflect on what we value most and to guide our children in seeking what truly matters—kindness, compassion, and a life rooted in faith. In our busy lives, let's remember to nurture these qualities in our families and communities.

Mission Month
Mission Month fundraising is going well and continues this week with lots of fun activities. Icy poles will be sold on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and we’ll have a whole school Crazy Hair Day on Friday. Units have their own fundraiser, including Guess the Lollies (Prep-2) on Monday and Silly Shirt Day (Year 6) on Friday (gold coin donation). Please check the Prep, Year 1, Year 2, and Year 6 reports for more details on their fundraising activities.
Year 5 Ballarat Camp
We wish our Year Five students all the best for their Ballarat camp! They’ll depart at 7.15am on Monday, 14th October, and return Wednesday around 5pm. The camp will include activities at Sovereign Hill and around Ballarat, focusing on the gold rush era, democracy through the Eureka Rebellion, and its impact on the region. It’s also a great chance for students to build social skills and independence. A big thanks to Mrs. Deacon for organising this special experience. Have fun, everyone! Thursday will be a rest day with no new learning scheduled. Supervision will be provided for any students who do attend school.
School Sports Victoria Region Athletics
The Region Athletics event will take place in Bendigo on Monday. Nine of our students from Years 3-6 have qualified and confirmed their attendance. We thank parents who are transporting and supervising students. Best of luck to all our participants!
Sacrament of Reconciliation Parent Session
The Sacrament of Reconciliation Information Night will be held at the church on Wednesday, 16th October at 7pm. We wish our teams all the best.
Staffing Update
Rosie Lennox has accepted a part-time position at a swim school in Brisbane and will be finishing with us next Friday, 18th October. Over the past two years, Rosie has been a wonderful Classroom Teacher and Learning Support Officer. While it was a tough decision for her, this move is the best choice to support her studies and be closer to family and friends. All the best Rosie!
School Assembly (Bundaleer)
Year One Bundaleer will host our Assembly at 2:30pm on Friday 15th October. Following the assembly, Bundaleer parents are welcome to join an afternoon tea in their child's classroom, offering an opportunity to view student learning and to mingle and meet other parents.

Mission Month
We have had a great first week of Mission Month at Sacred Heart. On Wednesday (our Mission Immersion Day) each class looked at a slideshow of photos sent through by Ive Aviles Bonilla who works as a Non-Government Organization representative in Cayara, Peru. The photos showed some recent projects that have been set up from our Sacred Heart school donations through our fundraising from 2023. The children were very interested and developed their understanding that our support can in turn, feed families and give the poor an opportunity to grow and develop as healthy productive members of their communities. It gives these people purpose and most importantly, enhances their human dignity. Our casual clothes day raised $465 with Myalla being the top class and donating $68. Thanks to all families for your generosity.
Each class read and discussed Fr Michael McKinnon’s recent Shared Table newsletter from Yanaoka, Peru. A copy of this came home to all families earlier in the week, so please take the time to ask your child what their new understanding and learning is from the discussions that happened in their classrooms.
Please note that the Coward’s Pie Drive orders will close next Tues 15th Oct. All $$ raised through this fundraiser will go to Fr Mick and Yanaoca so it would be appreciated if this fundraiser could be supported by as many families as possible.
Hamper donations are still being taken so if you would like to support this fundraiser please drop your donation into the school office. Hamper raffle will be drawn on Fri 25th at our school assembly. Tickets are $1 each and are available for purchase on CDF pay. Our first prize in the raffle is a 12 month Gym Membership kindly donated by Club Aquarius.
Thanks in anticipation to everyone for your support and generosity through Mission Month and we look forward to raising a considerable amount of money to be sent over to Fr Mick for distribution around Peru to assist those most in need.

A Special Report: Social Media Influencers
Social media influencers have become powerful individuals who often shape the opinions and beliefs of others due to strong connections with their audiences. In today's fast-paced digital world, attention has become a valuable commodity.
However, the impact of social media influencers on youth mental health is a growing concern, most recently, the controversial actions and statements of Andrew Tate. His rise to fame has made him a polarising figure, amassing a significant following of mostly young males. Educators and families have raised urgent concerns about the damaging nature of Tate’s content, worried that his messages may radicalise students and create a generation of young men with regressive and harmful beliefs.
Young people often compare themselves to the idealised lives presented by influencers, leading to feelings of inadequacy, low self-worth and dissatisfaction. Social media algorithms may also expose them to inappropriate or harmful content such as explicit material, promotion of harmful behaviours, or distorted perceptions of body image or mental health.
It is important to guide a young person’s social media use and promote open communication. Be curious to comprehend why they might be drawn to radical influencers, like Andrew Tate, and actively seek understanding as part of the solution. While not all influencers have a negative impact, parents play a vital role in ensuring a balanced approach to social media. By actively modelling kindness, respect and positive values, parents can help tackle the sway of radical influencers and be part of the solution to countering unhealthy masculinity.
This Special Report provides guidance on how to respond to misinformation and disinformation, instead encouraging critical thinking and emphasising the value of real-life connections.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Book Club catalogues were sent home with students during the week. A special feature of this issue is that there are many Christmas and gift items and books to choose from. There is also the opportunity to score free books, depending on the value of your order.
Did you know that every purchase you make on Book Club earns our school 15% of the order value in Scholastic Rewards? We use these to purchase more books and educational resources for the school. It all helps!
Please order via the online LOOP ordering system through the link provided or by following the instructions on the back of the catalogue. The school does not accept cash and cheques. If you are ordering gifts, please check the gift order box and keep it a surprise!
Please make your order via the link: https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/Login.aspx

First Aid
As we enter the warmer months and allergies start to spike, please ensure that your children have had their preventative medications before they arrive at school.
Hay Fever and seasonal allergies have been the main cause of discomfort this week and we would like to keep our students at school with us.
Please also ensure that your child/ren brings a water bottle to school as the weather starts to warm up. Staying hydrated is super important to reduce the risks of heat related illnesses.
Parent Information
Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!
Pick Up and Drop Off Points
In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.
Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.
Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.
Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.
Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.
Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.
School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay website https://shmildura.cdfpay.org.au
