ISSUE 30: 13th September, 2024
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
In the 24th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year B), we reflect on Jesus’ profound call to follow Him by carrying our own crosses. He reminds us that true discipleship requires sacrifice and a deep trust in God’s plan. As parents and members of the school community, we are invited to reflect on how we can model this selflessness in our daily lives, supporting our children and others in their journeys of faith, service, and love. Let us strive to live out our faith by being present, compassionate, and open to God’s guidance.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
We had a fantastic RUOK Breakfast today, and it was wonderful to see families gathering and enjoying the morning together. A big thank you to the Knights of the Southern Cross for cooking the delicious bacon and eggs, and to the staff and parents who helped with setup and pack up. Well done, everyone!
A big thank you to everyone who came dressed in their footy colours for AFL Day today! It was wonderful to see all the team spirit. Special thanks to our Year 6 students and Mr. Burford for hosting the fantastic footy clinics during the middle of the day!
The Sunray Warriors SHEC Excursion took place on Wednesday at the Mildura Sporting Precinct. Students engaged in various activities focused on the environment, including learning about habitats, fish, and water quality.
2025 Foundation Buddy Playtime
We’re excited to welcome our 2025 Foundation students for Buddy Playtime this Monday! Sessions will take place in the Library at 8.55am, 9.25am, 9.55am & 10.25am. During these times, the Foundation students and their buddies will enjoy some fun playtime together, with support from one of our Foundation teachers. Parents are welcome to stay with their child or relax with a cup of tea in the staffroom during the session. We look forward to seeing you there!
Year 6 Melbourne Camp
We wish our Year Six students all the best for their Melbourne camp! They’ll depart at 6:30am on Monday, 16th September, and return Thursday evening around 10pm. This camp offers a great chance to explore the city’s culture, visit museums, galleries, and historical sites, and build important social skills and independence. A huge thanks to Mrs. Thompson for all her hard work in organising this special experience. Have fun, everyone! Students are encouraged to take Friday as a rest day with no new learning scheduled.
End of Term Arrangements
Please note that students will finish early at 2:10 pm on Friday. Lunch will be at 12:40 pm. Our next newsletter will be sent home on Friday October 4th, with students returning to school on Monday, October 7th.
Work Experience Students
We’re excited to welcome Work Experience student, Myala Knobben, who will be working in various classrooms throughout the week.
Social Justice Report
Last weekend, Mrs. Carmichael once again took home a large amount of Lost Property to wash, dry, fold, and sort. After returning all the named items, there are still over 30 unclaimed pieces in Barramunga. Next week, she will place the remaining jumpers, jackets, and coats on a table outside Barramunga before and after school. If your child is missing something, or you need an extra item, feel free to take what you need. No need to ask—she’ll be happy to see the items go to good homes.
Please remember to name your child’s clothing to make Lost Property easier to manage in Term 4. Thanks in advance!
Retirement News
Mrs. Maree Irvin will be taking Long Service Leave for the remainder of the school year and plans to retire afterward. After 41 years of dedicated teaching in Catholic schools, this is a significant decision for Maree. We will honor her remarkable contribution to Sacred Heart with a special farewell at our End of Year & Graduation Mass on Thursday, 12th December. Mrs. Amilea Pacher will replace Maree in the Library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and we hope to finalise her Friday replacement in Dourim before the end of term.
Whooping Cough
The incidence of Whooping cough cases is continuing to increase across Victoria, particularly among school-aged children.
Whooping cough is a very contagious infection, mostly spread through coughing or sneezing.
Symptoms include:
- blocked or runny nose
- tiredness
- mild fever
- severe bouts of coughing, often followed by a ‘whooping’ sound on breathing.
Whooping cough can lead to life-threatening infections in babies.
If your child is unwell, they should not attend school. Please see a doctor if you or your child develops whooping cough symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment will help reduce the spread of the infection.
Students diagnosed with whooping cough must not attend school
If your child is diagnosed with whooping cough, they must not attend school for 21 days after the onset of the cough, or until they have received 5 days of antibiotic treatment.
You must notify the school if your child is diagnosed with whooping cough.
To further reduce the spread of infection to your child and the school community, the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2019 require that some students who were in the same classroom as a student diagnosed with whooping cough should not attend school.
Your child should not attend school for 14 days after they were last exposed to a person diagnosed with whooping cough, or until they have taken 5 days of a course of antibiotic treatment if they are:
- aged less than 7 years; and
- not fully vaccinated with 3 doses of whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine.
This exclusion is required by law – refer to the School exclusion table for primary schools and children’s services.
If your child is diagnosed with whooping cough, please contact the school to let us know.
Your support in keeping our students safe and well is greatly appreciated.
For more information about whooping cough, refer to Whooping cough on the Better Health Channel.
Vaccination is the best way to reduce the risk of whooping cough. The Department of Health recommends staying up to date with immunisations, including booster doses. A free booster dose of the pertussis vaccine is covered under the national immunisation program for students aged 12 to 13. If you are unsure about your child’s vaccination status for whooping cough, please discuss with an immunisation provider, such as your doctor.
Parish Mass
Minga and Eumeralla will attend this week’s Parish Mass at Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday morning at 9:30 am.
Sisters of Mercy Celebration
This September, Sr. Patricia will be relocating to Melbourne, marking the end of 119 years of the Sisters of Mercy's presence in the Sunraysia area. To commemorate this significant milestone, the parish will be holding a Mass and light luncheon. Mass will take place at 9am on Sunday, 29th September.
2025 School Numbers
As we begin planning for 2025, it's important for us to forecast student numbers to determine the number of classes, teachers, and classrooms required. We kindly ask parents to inform us if their children will be leaving Sacred Heart at the end of this year. Your assistance in this process is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
School Concert
This year, our school concert will take place earlier, on Friday 11th October. This change has been made to avoid the hot weather often experienced at the end of the year and to accommodate the busy schedules of staff and families. We are excited to have Bushwahzee, an external group, run workshops with the students throughout the day. They will also lead the Bush Cabaret concert from 6pm-7:30pm, with each class participating in a performance.
Names on Jumpers
Please ensure all jumpers are clearly labelled with your child's name to prevent them from being lost. This helps save money and makes it easier to return misplaced items. Thank you for your cooperation!
School Crossing
It is extremely important that all students cross the road at the school crossings on 11th and 12th street before and after school. It is a very busy area, particularly after school hours. Please remind your child that they must always cross at the crossing, as it is for everyone’s safety.
God Bless!
Mr Mark Gibson

Social Justice Report
Last weekend, I took home another incredible amount of Lost Property to wash, dry, fold and sort. After handing back to the children all the jumpers/jackets that were named, I now have 30+ items of clothing in Barramunga.
Once again, I will put these jumpers/jackets/coats on a table outside Barramunga before and after school next week. If your child has lost an item of clothing or you feel they just need another jumper/jacket, please come past the table and take the size you are after. You don't need to ask me, as I'll just be grateful to see these items going to families who want/need them.
This is also a continuing plea to parents to please name their child's jumper, jacket, hat, tracksuit pants so that in Term 4 Lost Property is easier to sort and quicker to return to the owner.
Thanks in anticipation
Mrs Chris Carmichael
Learning and Teaching
Within our region and across the state, our literacy results and rate of student progress are outstanding.
This week we have welcomed teachers from other schools to observe the teaching of literacy at Sacred Heart.
Videos of our literacy lessons are being shared with teachers across the state, as models of best practice.
Eyesight Tests
If you have not done so in the past year, we encourage parents to access their child’s free annual eye sight check. With the school holidays coming up, it may be a good time to make an appointment.
Vision and Learning Institute in Mildura
Jim and his team will be running a clinic in Mildura (to save clients travelling to Adelaide) on October 24-25th at Bright Futures Irymple. Contact the Vision Institute for an appointment. The Vision Learning Institute specialise in Behavioural Optometry, checking the visual status and how an individual interprets visual information- visual perceptual skills. If you have a child who is struggling with reading, you may wish to consider making an appointment.
Community News
Hamper Donations
As you would be aware, October is our Mission Month at Sacred Heart Primary School.
As part of our fundraising efforts we will be having a school wide raffle of several hampers.
We are asking our school community to generously donate items that can be put into these hampers. Gift items, toys, vouchers or sweet treats are just some suggestions of what may be donated. Families can hand items to their classroom teacher or at the front office.
Raffle tickets can be purchased on CDF Pay from the start of Term 4 and are on sale until Thursday 24th October. Tickets are $1 each.
Pie Drive
This year we will once again be running our Pie Drive Fundraiser from Coward’s Cakes. Order forms will be sent home with students today.
After costs, all proceeds will go to the Columban Overseas Missions to support the people of South America.
All orders and payments will need to be submitted by Tuesday 15th October, 2024. Payment is made through CDF Pay or at the office. Family Pies $12, Cocktail selections $19 per dozen.
SHEC Update
Our SHEC (Sacred Heart Environmental Committee) has been busy undertaking a number of projects this term. They created some special gifts for Fathers day and have been busy making some improvements around the school such as repaving around the garden beds and planting some flowers around the school.
This week we were lucky enough to attend an excursion to Mildura Sporting Precinct for their annual Sunray Warriors showcase. Students participated in a range of activities focusing on our environment such as learning about habitats, fish and water quality.
Learning Diversity
Thank you to all parents for attending our recent PSG (Program Support Group) meetings. The purpose of PSG meetings is to work together to plan and support the educational, health, social and emotional wellbeing of students with diverse learning needs. Regular PSG meetings enable us to revise and develop learning goals, interventions and classroom adjustments based on individual student needs. These goals and meetings are used to develop an ILP (Individual Learning Plan). An ILP is a tool used to outline how the school will help your child achieve their educational, health, social and emotional wellbeing goals.
SWPBS
Our SWPBS focus next week will be to revisit “What is a good learner”. Classes will talk about what it looks like, sounds like and feels like to be a good learner in their classrooms.
Children learn by observing, listening, exploring, experimenting and asking questions. Being interested, motivated and engaged in learning is important for children once they start school. It can also help if they understand why they’re learning something. And as your child gets older, your child will enjoy taking more responsibility for their learning and getting more involved in making decisions about learning and organising activities. Your child keeps learning from you over the years. When your child goes to school, you can help your child have a positive attitude to learning, just by being positive yourself and showing you value the learning that the school provides. Children learn in different ways – some learn by seeing, some by hearing, some by reading, some by doing. And all children benefit from having a variety of learning experiences.
Congratulations to our Thumbs up Ray White Awardees this week, Grace Paterson, Alexander Henderson and Tessa Dean.

A Special Report: Parenting Styles
There are so many different opinions offered on how best to parent. New parents will often have firm beliefs about how they wish to balance love and discipline, but this ideal often goes out the window when a toddler throws their first tantrum in the supermarket!
Raising children can bring parents and caregivers great joy despite many learning ‘on the job’ and growing into the role through experience and understanding. Children will always flourish in a warm and loving environment, supported by clear guidance.
In this Special Report, parents and caregivers can gain a greater understanding of the four defined parenting styles by taking part in the quiz. It can guide parents towards deciding which style they wish to adopt and the effects it may have on their children.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
Here is the link to your special report:
Foundation News
What a great way to end our week with Footy Colours Day. Check out our class team photos! The students had so much fun showcasing their footy skills at the activities on the oval.
In Mathematics we are beginning to explore ‘share betweens’ to explain division. Students have been using hands-on resources to explore this concept. They enjoyed teaching Cookie Monster to share his cookies - this would be a great activity to ask your child about. We will continue this focus next week.
Primary School Nursing Program
This week your child brought home a ‘Visiting Primary School Nurse Program’ envelope. The Visiting PS Nurse Program provides a free service to all Prep students attending Primary School in Victoria. Our school nurse is Denise Pragt and she will be visiting in term four. Denise has a background in Midwifery and Child and Family Health and has 36 years of nursing experience. It is an excellent free service to take advantage of.
Denise provides:
- the opportunity for free hearing and vision screening and general development assessment
- information and advice about healthy behaviours
- a link for children and families to community-based health and well-being services.
- providing parenting resources
The questionnaire is to be completed online, there is a guide on how to register and complete the form below. If you would like your child to participate, please tick the YES consent box by Monday 9th September. Denise will send the results to your email address and call you if you wish, or call you if there is any need to refer your child to other health services.
Some reminders:
- Sounds to continue working on with your child at home: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, r, f, o, c, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ll, ff, ss, sh, ee, qu, z, zz, ch, v, x, y, wh, th (unvoiced as in ‘thick’), oo, ng, ay. It is important that we continue this practice as we are reading and writing with digraphs during Literacy time.
- Make sure we continue to read every night at home and record it in the reading diary.
- Learn all the tricky words at the back of the reading diary.
- Library day is Wednesday.
- Show and tell reminder = When I grow up I want to be…

Year One News
A wonderful week in Year One! The students had a fantastic day wearing their favourite footy colours today and participating in an AFL clinic with the senior students. Thank you to the families who came to breakfast this morning at school as part of RUOK Day.
We have been learning about features of places during our Geography unit this term. The students were able to choose a natural feature to learn more about, create a poster and then present their posters. We have been SO impressed with the pride they have taken in their posters as well as their confidence to speak in front of the class when presenting their topics. Keep an eye on Seesaw as these presentations will be posted to your child's profile.
We have begun talking about our Mission month activities for next term. Thank you to those families who have already sent in a donation for the hampers. Please start keeping your coins aside as there are a few activities that will require coins.

Year Two News
Today we celebrated Footy Day and WOW what a ripper day it was! We had so many different teams represented and the school was full of colour. The children loved the footy activities on the oval provided by the Senior Unit children and then had fun watching and barracking while the Year 6 children played a footy match against the Teachers.
Waminda Assembly: Mrs Collins was incredibly proud of all the Waminda children with their commitment to learn their reading for our class Assembly today. All children used the microphone well and delivered their reading fluently and clearly. The class did an awesome job learning the actions to our “More than a Game” song and performed like SUPER STARS on the stage. Congratulations to all children on a SUPER DOOPER effort today in front of the whole school and many parents. Thanks also to the parents who supplied our yummy afternoon tea to share.
Year Three News
Year Three has had another wonderful week of learning. There will be no homework for the last week of term.
This week we viewed the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson. We learnt about seeking and expecting enthusiastic, informed consent in our behaviour towards others. (Even situations like simple hugs and encroaching onto other people’s space.) We also looked at technology use, particularly groups of people who are and are not appropriate to communicate with online, and types of messages/online communication that are never appropriate to be sent to us. We discussed the importance of speaking with our trusted adults about anything that makes us feel a bit unsure or unsafe.
Year Three loved celebrating R U Ok Day and Footy Day this week!
Next week we will be finalising our learning for the term, showcasing some of their work on SeeSaw.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Looking ahead to Term Four:
School Concert: 11th October

This week we have been completing samples of work and have begun to post work samples to seesaw for you to look at.
Some Year Four students who are members of SHEC had a great day on Wednesday at the Mildura Precinct as part of the annual Sunray Warriors showcase. Their participation tied in beautifully with our Humanities studies around habitats.
Congratulations to the Year Four students who have recently passed Read3 Modules and received certificates.
We have begun talking about our Mission month activities for next term. Thank you to those families who have already sent in a donation for the hampers. Please start keeping your coins aside as there are a few activities that will require coins.

With all this new learning, we are looking forward to our stay at Sovereign Hill in October. Please make sure you have granted permission on Simon and left any relevant medical notes as we finalise the details of this camp.
Looking ahead to Term Four:

If anyone has any spare time and is willing to help out with book covering at home or at school from time to time, we would be very happy to hear from you. Please email or drop into the library and let Mrs Pacher or myself know and we would be only too happy to have a chat to explain what is required and supply you with what is needed.

First Aid
I would like to introduce myself to the Sacred Heart Community. My name is Ebony and I have joined Sacred Heart Primary School as the First Aid Officer.
You may receive an email from me regarding your child/s health. I am updating plans for the remainder of the year for Asthma, Anaphylaxis and Allergies. These plans will be used for the remainder of the year, and in 2025 I will be in contact again to update these more appropriately.
I appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time, as we would love to best support your child whilst they are here at school, on off-site activities and exploring on camps.
I have been sending out emails recently to try and keep these plans up to date. If you have not received an email from me and your child suffers from Anaphylaxis/Severe Allergy or Asthma, I believe that it may be sitting in your ‘spam’ or ‘junk’ folder. Please check these folders and return the documents sent as soon as possible.
Just a reminder that if your child has Anaphylaxis or Asthma (even if it is only seasonal) we require an Anaphylaxis or Asthma Action Plan to be filled out by the GP. We use this in conjunction with the Student Health Support Plan and this is to ensure that your child’s health needs are supported as best we can here at school.
Grade 5 Camp = If your child is attending Grade 5 camp in the second week of Term 4, please return the Medication Authority Form that was sent home on Wednesday 11th September. If your child requires any sort of medication administration whilst on camp and you have not received a medication authority form, please contact me at school on 5023 1204. We are unable to administer medication to your child without this form.
I look forward to meeting more of you! - Ebony

Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!
Pick Up and Drop Off Points
These designated areas serve as convenient points for collecting or dropping off children at the school if you are walking in with them. Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.
Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.
Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.
Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.
Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.
School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay website https://shmildura.cdfpay.org.au
