ISSUE 29: 6th September, 2024
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
In the Gospel for the 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year B), we witness Jesus healing a man who was deaf and mute, showing His deep compassion and care for those in need. This powerful moment reminds us that Jesus seeks to heal not just our physical ailments but also our hearts and relationships. As parents, we are called to be compassionate and attentive to the needs of others, especially within our families. Let us take time this week to listen with love and respond with kindness, following Christ’s example of healing and compassion.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
Congratulations to our students for their impressive performance at the SSV Sunraysia Mini Olympics! Many have qualified for the Regional Athletics in Bendigo on October 14th.
Thank you to all parents and staff for your participation in this week’s PSG Meetings. With around 100 meetings held, your input is greatly valued as we work together to enhance student outcomes.
On Tuesday, we enjoyed a dynamic Backflips Against Bullying performance. The engaging acrobatics sparked important discussions about bullying and resilience, emphasising key messages like the impact of kindness, the importance of real-life play, and handling rumours effectively.
School Hats
Students need to wear their school hats during lunch and recess. Students without a hat during these times will not be able to play.
Parish Mass
Eumeralla will attend this week’s Parish Mass at Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday morning at 9:30 am.
RUOK Day
RUOK Day is this Thursday, offering a great chance for students, parents, and staff to check in with one another as we raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing. Most classes will engage in activities throughout the day to support this important initiative.
RUOK Breakfast
Join us for an RUOK Breakfast at school on Friday from 7:45am-8:30am! This is a great chance to promote kindness and positivity within our school community. The breakfast is free for students, parents, and guardians. To assist with catering, please place your order via CDF Pay. We’ll be serving bacon & egg rolls, fruit salad, corn flakes, and rice bubbles. Since meals will be prepared based on pre-orders, please make sure to finalise your order by 9am on Monday, 9th September. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to accommodate any breakfast requests on the day. On this day lunch orders will not be available.
School Assembly (Waminda)
Year Two Waminda will host our Assembly at 2:30pm on Friday 13th September. Following the assembly, Waminda parents are welcome to join an afternoon tea in their child's classroom, offering an opportunity to view student learning and to mingle and meet other parents.
AFL Day
AFL Day is this Friday! Students and staff are encouraged to wear their favourite football team colours or casual clothes. Mr Burford will be coordinating senior students to run football clinics for the classes.
Sisters of Mercy Celebration
This September, Sr. Patricia will be relocating to Melbourne, marking the end of 119 years of the Sisters of Mercy's presence in the Sunraysia area. To commemorate this significant milestone, the parish will be holding a Mass and light luncheon. Mass will take place at 9am on Sunday, 29th September.
2025 School Numbers
As we begin planning for 2025, it's important for us to forecast student numbers to determine the number of classes, teachers, and classrooms required. We kindly ask parents to inform us if their children will be leaving Sacred Heart at the end of this year. Your assistance in this process is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
School Concert
This year, our school concert will take place earlier, on Friday 11th October. This change has been made to avoid the hot weather often experienced at the end of the year and to accommodate the busy schedules of staff and families. We are excited to have Bushwahzee, an external group, run workshops with the students throughout the day. They will also lead the Bush Cabaret concert from 6pm-7:30pm, with each class participating in a performance.
Names on Jumpers
Please ensure all jumpers are clearly labelled with your child's name to prevent them from being lost. This helps save money and makes it easier to return misplaced items. Thank you for your cooperation!
God Bless!
Mr Mark Gibson

Learning and Teaching
Victorian Curriculum 2.0 Updates - Mathematics
In the latest 2.0 release of the Victorian Curriculum, significant updates have been introduced to enhance the teaching and learning of Mathematics. These changes focus on deepening students' understanding of core mathematical concepts through a more integrated and applied approach. The updated curriculum emphasises real-world problem-solving, encouraging students to connect mathematical theory with practical applications. Additionally, there's a renewed focus on critical thinking and reasoning skills, helping students develop a more robust grasp of mathematical principles. Overall, these updates aim to better prepare students for future challenges by fostering a more dynamic and engaging learning environment in Mathematics. Our staff have recently undertaken professional learning into familiarising themselves with these changes and will implement the revised curriculum in the 2025 school year.
Community News
As you would be aware, October is our Mission Month at Sacred Heart Primary School. As part of our fundraising efforts we will be having a school wide raffle of several hampers.
Donation of Hamper Items - We are asking our school community to generously donate items that can be put into these hampers. Gift items, toys, vouchers or sweet treats are just some suggestions of what may be donated. Please give your donations to Fiona Pike by Friday 20th September (Last day of Term 3)
Raffle tickets will go on sale in Term 4 and raffle will be drawn during our mission month celebrations.
Sacred Heart Families Mural
This week each new family to Sacred Heart this year received a ziplock bag with a piece of fabric that had a vine leaf traced onto it. Families are asked to decorate the leaf in whatever way they saw fit, making it unique to their family. The vine leaves are then added to our mural.
Steve Hedrics, local artist (and grandparent) designed and produced the background of the mural - it is a large vine, from which are attached each family’s vine leaf. The mural is protected with glass sliding doors for longevity. As a memento, when the last child in a family, or a family leaves Sacred Heart, they will receive their leaf during the End of Year/ Graduation Mass.
If your family has not received a vine leaf to add to our mural please contact the office.
Learning Diversity
Thank you to all parents who attended PSG meetings this week. If you missed your meeting please contact your child’s classroom teacher to reschedule.
SWPBS
Our SWPBS focus for the next two weeks is based around being kind. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss with child what does it mean to be kind? What is the difference between being nice and being kind?
Kindness doesn’t mean ignoring people when they do things that are unkind, wrong, ignorant, racist, or discriminatory. It doesn’t mean keeping quiet when you disagree with someone about a moral issue. But it does mean treating people with respect.
As adults, we must set the example for younger generations. We must show them by our actions, our words, and our choices, what it means to be kind. For it is only by watching good examples that children will learn what kindness really looks like. Whether you are a parent or not, children are watching you. They are watching how you interact with others. They are watching to see what you do when you witness something unkind. They are looking to you to set the tone. They want to see who you really are.

A Special Report: R U OK? Day
Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm - are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics, and societal expectations, are contributing to these issues. It's therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health, and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.
R U OK?Day is an initiative that focuses on preventing suicide by encouraging meaningful personal connections and helping informal support networks to help recognise the signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, "Are you OK?"
Engaging in R U OK? Day activities goes beyond the classroom; it's a commitment to our students' overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued, and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK?Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.
This Special Report provides guidance on how to talk to your child about mental health and engage in meaningful discussions.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
Here is the link to your special report:
Foundation News
This week we have introduced the conjunction ‘but’. Students understand that ‘but’ is a conjunction that indicates a change in direction.
In regards to our ‘reader tubs’ in our classrooms, we don’t go by ‘levels’ of books, the number or code you may see in the back of a take-home reader was created by Mrs Sherry in an attempt to align the different reading programs to our structured literacy. This is not a reading level; we do not use levelled readers in Foundation. Likewise reading tubs are not fixed on a certain level but organised based on a child's individual needs at that time. Please support your child to master the code, read words automatically, attend to punctuation (taking a breath and a break at full stops) and continue to read the weekly Enhance Comprehension Books with scripted comprehension questions. Parents do not need to be comparing children's reading levels, the teachers will let you know how your child's literacy is developing. If you have any further questions please see your child’s teacher.
Primary School Nursing Program
This week your child brought home a ‘Visiting Primary School Nurse Program’ envelope. The Visiting PS Nurse Program provides a free service to all Prep students attending Primary School in Victoria. Our school nurse is Denise Pragt and she will be visiting in term four. Denise has a background in Midwifery and Child and Family Health and has 36 years of nursing experience. It is an excellent free service to take advantage of.
Denise provides:
- the opportunity for free hearing and vision screening and general development assessment
- information and advice about healthy behaviours
- a link for children and families to community-based health and well-being services.
- providing parenting resources
The questionnaire is to be completed online, please use the link below for a guide on how to register and complete the form. If you would like your child to participate, please tick the YES consent box by Monday 9th September. Denise will send the results to your email address and call you if you wish, or call you if there is any need to refer your child to other health services.
Some reminders:
- Sounds to continue working on with your child at home: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, r, f, o, c, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ll, ff, ss, sh, ee, qu, z, zz, ch, v, x, y, wh, th (unvoiced as in ‘thick’), oo, ng, ay. It is important that we continue this practice as we are reading and writing with digraphs in Literacy time.
- Make sure we are continuing to read every night at home and recording it in the Reading diary.
- Learn all the tricky words at the back of the reading diary.
- Library day is Wednesday.
- Show and tell reminder = something from your favourite sporting team.
This term we have the following dates of interest:
13th September: RUOK? Day Breakfast
13th September: AFL Day
20th September: End of Term 3 - 2.10pm finish
Year One News
Please keep an eye out for SeeSaw tasks and assessments being posted to your child's profile.
These tasks are often part of our assessment and cover all areas of the curriculum. You are more than welcome to comment on the learning tasks and posts; this is valued and appreciated. If you do not have this app or need assistance to access it, please see your classroom teacher.
Due to the safety of students, the Olive Grove gate near the Year One classrooms will now be locked in the mornings. Please enter through the front of the school Twelfth St or Tamarisk Grove (back of school near the oval). This gate will also be locked at the end of the day however you can still exit at Olive Grove through the gate near the Art House.
Students have been learning to identify and use visual conventions in their artworks focusing on different styles, subject matter and art forms from different cultures and historical periods, including artworks by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The students looked at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples symbols and learnt what they represented and how they told a story, then created their own bookmarks using these symbols.
Backflips Against Bullying: Backflips Against Bullying is a program engaging students through Parkour and Acrobatics. On Tuesday, the Year One students enjoyed a high-energy 1 Hour performance of flips and stunts as well as discussion and role play about bullying. The students learnt about resilience and practical tools to help victims along with empowering students to hold each other accountable.
Final Show and Tell of the term next week: Your favourite footy team (AFL or any other ‘football’ you support). Please note there is no Show and Tell in week 10.
Important dates to remember:
13th September: RUOK? Day Breakfast 7.45am all orders via CDF Pay at no cost. There will be no canteen on this day.
13th September: AFL Day - Wear football colours
20th September: End of Term 3 - 2.10pm finish
Year Two News
Throughout this term, the children have been working diligently on a variety of Seesaw tasks over all areas of the curriculum. These tasks are often part of our assessment and complement the work children do in class. We would value a comment to your child on Seesaw in response to their work/photos, as they often look through their posts and proudly read to a friend comments that parents have written.
Year Three News
Congratulations to the following Year Three students, Rose O'Bryan, Ollie Parsons, Ruby Joyce, Austin Fox and Olly Harding who participated in the Mini Olympics on Thursday. They had a fantastic day and represented our school with pride!
This week, students have loved learning about division and symmetry in maths through many hands-on learning opportunities!
Students should feel proud of their organisation skills throughout their structured literacy each morning.
Just a reminder that students now need their hat for play times as well.
As we move towards the last two weeks of term, please keep checking SeeSaw for samples of your students learning.

First Aid
I would like to introduce myself to the Sacred Heart Community. My name is Ebony and I have joined Sacred Heart Primary School as the First Aid Officer.
You may receive an email from me regarding your child/s health. I am updating plans for the remainder of the year for Asthma, Anaphylaxis and Allergies. These plans will be used for the remainder of the year, and in 2025 I will be in contact again to update these more appropriately.
I appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time, as we would love to best support your child whilst they are here at school, on off-site activities and exploring on camps.
I have been sending out emails recently to try and keep these plans up to date. If you have not received an email from me and your child suffers from Anaphylaxis/Severe Allergy or Asthma, I believe that it may be sitting in your ‘spam’ or ‘junk’ folder. Please check these folders and return the documents sent as soon as possible.
Just a reminder that if your child has Anaphylaxis or Asthma (even if it is only seasonal) we require an Anaphylaxis or Asthma Action Plan to be filled out by the GP. We use this in conjunction with the Student Health Support Plan and this is to ensure that your child’s health needs are supported as best we can here at school.
Grade 6 Camp = If your child is attending Grade 6 camp in the next couple of weeks. Please return the Medication Authority Form that was sent home last Friday 30th August. If your child requires any sort of medication administration whilst on camp and you have not received a medication authority form, please contact me at school on 5023 1204. We are unable to administer medication to your child without this form.
I look forward to meeting more of you! - Ebony

Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!
Pick Up and Drop Off Points
These designated areas serve as convenient points for collecting or dropping off children at the school if you are walking in with them. Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.
Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.
Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.
Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.
Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.
School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay website https://shmildura.cdfpay.org.au
