ISSUE 17: 31st May, 2024
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
As we observe the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are reminded of Jesus' extraordinary acts of healing and compassion. In the Gospel, Jesus' deep concern for the suffering and His power to bring both physical and spiritual restoration shine through. For parents and members of the Sacred Heart Primary School community, this is a powerful message about the importance of empathy and kindness in our daily lives. Just as Jesus reached out to heal and comfort those in need, we too are called to support and care for one another, especially in challenging times. Let us use this opportunity to teach our children the value of compassion, fostering a nurturing and loving environment within our families and our school. By embodying these principles, we can help build a community grounded in empathy and mutual support.

Soup Kitchen:
Last Monday Sacred Heart School cooked and served at the Parish Soup Kitchen. As always our students were respectful, helpful, happy and well-mannered. We had many positive comments from the clients about the children’s behaviour and friendliness. Myself, together with the staff present, were incredibly proud of all these children.
Many thanks to Stella Kourdis, Oliver & Rory Love, Kasey & Leo Waters, Charlie Guthrie, Mia Beckwith together with their parents, for volunteering to assist with this important social justice initiative in our community. The 22 clients were served with soup, roast beef, gravy and vegetables followed by chocolate ripple cake for dessert. This delicious meal was prepared by some of our generous staff members.
I trust the school families involved have received the SK roster I sent home last week. If you have not confirmed your availability for your upcoming rostered shift, please send me an email ccarmichael@shmildura.catholic.edu.au . We will have a new roster come out in August for the remainder of the year.
Many thanks to all involved so far this year

Social Justice Leader
Learning and Teaching
Explicit Instruction is a direct and structured method of teaching. The content and skills of a learning area are broken into small chunks, which are directly taught and practised, until mastery has been achieved. Explicit instruction is used to teach new skills, content and concepts. Once mastery has been achieved, students are able to apply what they have learnt to problem solving and discovery tasks. Explicit instruction is used across all learning areas, ensuring we don’t leave learning to chance.
SWPBS News
Congratulations to Sevanna Panuccio, Harrison Miller and Braxton Ficarra on receiving our Ray White awards this week for their outstanding efforts at school.
Our SWPBS focus for next week will be on making kind choices and being caring to others.
Sometimes, people get confused about what is and isn’t bullying. People can think that someone saying something they don’t like is bullying – but it’s not. Bullying is different from conflict or unkindness. Bullying is mean, but being mean doesn't always mean bullying.
Bullying behaviours:
- Are aggressive, unkind or mean behaviours
- Are repeated behaviours (it must happen multiple times, in an ongoing way to be defined as bullying)
- Happen on purpose
- Must have a power imbalance – which means that people bullying and the people being bullied aren’t seen as being ‘equal’, e.g. older, bigger people picking on smaller, younger people, or ‘popular’ people targeting someone who they see as being ‘unpopular’, or who is struggling to make friends.
Bullying is not the same as:
- Being rude – saying or doing something hurtful that wasn’t planned or meant to hurt someone, e.g. someone pushing in front of you in the canteen line
- Being mean – doing something hurtful to someone on purpose once or twice, e.g. a friend refusing to play with you one day
- Conflict – having a disagreement with a friend, e.g. two friends getting into an argument and saying mean things to each other
- Respectful feedback on behaviours you're doing that aren’t ok, e.g. “It’s not ok roll your eyes every time they talk about sport.”
- A friend putting in a ‘boundary’ e.g. “I don't like it when you keep telling me what to do.”
- Natural consequences in socialising, e.g. a friend not trusting you because you shared their secret
I'm being bullied - what should I do?
These things can help stop bullying:
- Stay calm - don't react emotionally (people who bully usually want you to get angry or upset)
- Report it - tell trustworthy adults and keep talking to them until the bullying stops; reporting it helps keep people safe (and isn't the same as 'dobbing' which is about getting someone in trouble over nothing)
- Get support - bullying can affect your mental health and self-worth - having the support of family, friends, teachers and/or professionals can make a big difference
Learning Diversity
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with a disability.
Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher.
PSG meetings this term will take place in conjunction with our Parent Teacher interviews in week 11.
Wellbeing
Due to the pandemic, the world we now live in is a very different place. The hyperconnected nature of our current environment means that we are constantly being reminded of the challenges we face via numerous media and social media channels. Our connectivity to the digital world exposes us to a barrage of messages that can leave us feeling overwhelmed. As a result, many children and their parents are reporting higher levels of stress and anxiety.
Our brains have not evolved fast enough to adapt to this digital landscape. The combination of constant access to information and having little control over the situations presented, can be stressful and overwhelming. It is therefore important for adult carers to check in with their children and be aware of what information they may have been exposed to. It may not necessarily be the information itself that is harmful, but more their inability to process and make sense of it. Providing children with the skills and strategies to cope will enable them to flourish and thrive, socially, emotionally and academically.
The blueprint for parenting, based on our own experiences, is no longer fit for purpose in raising kids as citizens of tomorrow. This can be inherently stressful and overwhelming, not only for parents and carers, but children alike. If left untreated or unmanaged, constant stress and anxiety can lead to a number of behavioural issues or health consequences.
This Special Report suggests a number of strategies to help manage any feelings of overwhelm that you or your child may be experiencing.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

Foundation News
WOW! WOW! WOW! What an amazing display of dancing last night. A big thank you to our prep parents for the supper and for dancing up a storm with the students. A massive WELL DONE to the students in Prep (and Year 1 and Year 2)... you all danced like superstars. This week the Prep students have been doing a lot of learning about 3D shapes, writing sentences and have begun listening to The Creation Story from the Bible. Ask your child if they know whether The Creation Story comes from The Old Testament or The New Testament. The sounds you will need to be continually practising at home are: m, s, t, a, p, i, n, f, r, o, c, h, d, e, g, l, and the tricky words: I, the, my, a, is. Now that we are learning and having to remember more sounds it is really important that the students can recognise and know each letter/sound automatically. Continue using the fluency charts at home to build on automaticity.
Reminders:
- All children should have headphones at school (named)
- School starts at 8:45am each day. If you are at school after 8:45am you must sign your child in at the office.
- Your child’s library bag needs to be at school every day - kept in their school bag.
- Sports days are Thursday and Friday - sport uniform is needed.
- Practise the sounds caterpillars and snakes and fluency chart each night.
- Read and record ‘Enhanced Comprehension’ and ‘Reader’ in the reading diary each night.
- Library books are to be returned to school on Mondays.
- Sounds to continue practising with your child/ren at home: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, r, f, o, r, c, h, e, g, l
Here are some photos of this week’s learning. Enjoy your weekend
Year One News
We are SO proud of the fantastic effort all of the students in the Junior Unit displayed at the Stomp Extravaganza on Tuesday evening. A huge thank you to the Year One families for the delicious supper and the beautiful dancing you did with your child.
This week the students have been learning about adding the suffix ‘s’ and the suffix ‘ing’ to base words. We have also been expanding sentences using because, but and so and had a huge focus on independently spelling the word ‘because’; ask your child at home to spell the word ‘because’ and see how they go!
In the back of the students Home Reading Diary there are tricky words for the students to practise reading and spelling at home, which will consolidate their learning. We highly encourage you to assist your child with reading and writing these words around 2-3 times a week. We have continued our Maths focus of subtracting numbers, using strategies such as pictures, counting back, hands on materials and tens frames.
Show and Tell focus for Week 8: What is your favourite landscape? Do you have a photo of a beautiful landscape or have you been to a place with a beautiful landscape before like a beach, mountains or parkland? - linked with Earth and Space Science.
Parish Mass was cancelled for Week 7 therefore Bundaleer will be attending Parish Mass on Thursday 6th June at 9.30am, families are welcome to attend.
Reminder: Friday 7th June is a Pupil Free Day - Staff will be attending RE Enhancing Catholic Identity Data.
Year Two News
We have now moved our learning from Earth & Science into Chemical Science with the focus on Materials and their Properties. This week we made playdough to see what happens when we mix things together.
Next week we are using natural materials and will need the children to bring a selection of natural materials (such as seed pods, bark, small sticks, stones, shells, wool.) We will need these at school by next Wednesday.
Here are the photos of the Barramunga children after we had listened to the story "Bowerbird Blues" during National Simultaneous Story time last week. I bet you think their Bowerbird nests are incredible!
Due to the school closure on Friday 7th June (Week 8), Show & Tell will now be as follows:
Mystery Bag: Weeks 7 & 9
When I Grow Up: Weeks 10 & 11
Year Three News
We have had an amazing week! Year Three students have loved participating in STOMP and enjoyed their School Disco!
On Monday your child brought home a homework task requesting that they interview an older friend or family member as part of our History/Changing Communities unit. They may simply write answers to the questionson the sheet, or may like to take the opportunity to present their findings in a more creative way. (See task descriptor sheet for ideas.) This task will continue for week 8 in order to allow time for families to catch up with their interviewees. Students will present their findings with their classmates.
Year Four News
Year Four students have had a very busy week. We concluded the STOMP program with a fantastic turnout of students busting their moves at the Disco. Thank you parents for supporting this activity by bringing your child/ren and being prompt in collecting them.
From what we saw they all had a wonderful time. Check out these photos!
We congratulate the following students from Year Four who participated in the Regional Cross Country in St Arnaud on Tuesday. Emmy Guthrie, Lily Colbert, Imogen Stafford, Alexander Henderson & Max O’Callaghan. All can be very proud of their efforts as we are of them.
This week we began a new History focus with our inquiry question being-’How did Europeans find Australia and why did they choose to settle here? Over the next few weeks we will be looking at early explorers as well as stories of The First Fleet.
Finally, we congratulate Myalla on presenting lots of learning that has been happening in Year Four at their Assembly.
A reminder that next Friday, June 7th, is a pupil free day.
Enjoy your week!
Natalee, Jaimi & Cathryn
Year Five News
What a big week we have had in Year 5. The disco was a fabulous night enjoyed by all. The Year 5s really tore up the dance floor, especially in the air guitar competition! Well done on the fabulous participation in both the Stomp sessions and disco, it’s been lots of fun.
Congratulations to Jenson for competing in the Region Cross Country in St Arnaud on Tuesday.
Congratulations also to all the Year 5s who attended the Interschool Sports on Thursday, representing our school with pride and showing great sportsmanship at all times.
We are learning about factors, multiples and perimeter in maths this week. We are also continuing our research projects on Space and Natural Disasters.
RULERS and RUBBERS:
A few students have misplaced or broken the ruler and or rubber that was supplied by the school at the beginning of the year. If this is true for your child, we ask that a new, 30cm ruler and or rubber is provided as soon as possible as we will be using them a lot over the coming weeks.
Year Six News
Our major focus during Maths lessons at the moment is division. Students have been learning to use the partitioning strategy and the algorithm to solve division problems. We strongly encourage students to practise their times tables at home, as this will help them immensely during this topic.
Students had fun participating in some hands- on learning during Science in Amaroo this week.
A few snaps from Monday night’s disco.
Preparation for Year 6 camp, September 16th to 19th (last week of Term 3), is underway. Notes will be sent out closer to the time, however, if you know your child will not be attending for some reason can you please let Mrs Thompson know via email as soon as possible. lthompson@shmildura.catholic.edu.au
A reminder that next Friday, June 7th, is a pupil free day.
Library News
BOOK FAIR
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who purchased books at our Book Fair last week. It was another successful event that engaged children and promoted a love of books and literacy. It was also a fun opportunity for children to see, touch and connect with books that they wanted to read. Every book sold at the Book Fair has earned us free books for our school. Through your wonderful support, we reached a total of $4390.82. At a result we have now received a generous commission of $700 worth of books from the Book Fair that we can add to our Library collection and further $716 to spend on books at Scholastic Book Club.
NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY
It was wonderful to see classes taking time to stop, listen and enjoy this year’s National Simultaneous Story - ‘Bowerbird Blues’, read online by author, Aura Parker. It was such a beautiful story which generated much discussion and provided an opportunity to participate in related artwork activities.

On Thursday, our boys and girls football teams competed in the district event held at Sarah Oval (no.3). Both teams braved wet and windy conditions but managed to still play quick and skilful football over the course of the day.
The girls side played St. Paul’s twice, winning both times. The boys played St. Paul’s and Trinity Lutheran, also winning both of their games.
Congratulations to both sides and we wish them luck at the division event to be held on the 14th of June.

Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!
Pick Up and Drop Off Points
These designated areas serve as convenient points for collecting or dropping off children at the school if you are walking in with them. Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.
Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.
Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.
Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.
Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.
School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay website https://shmildura.cdfpay.org.au
