ISSUE 2: 2nd February, 2024
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
As we gather on this Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time, let us reflect on the power of small actions. In the routine of our lives, it's easy to underestimate the impact of our daily choices. This week, encourage your children to embrace the opportunity to make a positive difference, no matter how small. It is often these seemingly insignificant gestures that contribute to a brighter and more compassionate community.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
Welcome to the 2024 school year! It has been an absolute joy to greet students and their families this week as they have arrived at school. The excitement, anticipation and joy has been evident as they have walked through the gates. Some of our young people have grown so much over the holidays. There was also great excitement to welcome our 2024 Prep students as they began their learning at Sacred Heart on Monday.
A very warm and friendly welcome to the students, families and staff who have begun their school journey with us this year. We hope that Sacred Heart provides you with a positive and strong educational experience and a true sense of community and connection.
Welcome New Staff
Mrs Fiona Pike: We're thrilled to welcome Fiona Pike as our new Deputy Principal: Leader in Mental Health and Wellbeing. With over two decades of teaching experience and varied leadership roles, Fiona holds expertise in supporting students' wellbeing, mental health, and behaviour. Her focus aligns seamlessly with our new leadership position and the initiation of the Mental Health in Primary Schools program. It also is closely aligned to our School Improvement goal of ensuring students have a positive experience at Sacred Heart where they feel safe, included, valued, and engaged in education. Welcome to Sacred Heart Fiona.
Mrs Laurenca Dichiera: Exciting news as we welcome Laurenca Dichiera to our team as a new Learning Support Officer. A dedicated mother of five, Laurenca has regularly assisted in her children’s classrooms and is currently undergoing training in School-Based Education Support. She will be a valuable addition to the Prep to Year 2 Learning Community, with a significant focus on supporting our Prep classrooms.
We are pleased to welcome back Mrs. Kim Taylor (Digital Technology) and Mrs. Amilea Pacher (Year 5 Minga Mon-Tue) from their maternity leave. On February 19th, Mrs. Danielle Gunn (Year 5 Minga Wed-Fri) will also return. Until then, Mrs. Georgina Whitehouse will be working in Minga on Danielle’s allocated days.
Beginning of Year School Mass
Join us this Thursday, February 9th, at 9:30 am for the Beginning of School Year Mass at Sacred Heart Parish Church. During this celebration, the 2024 Student Leadership Team will be presented with their badges. Parents and friends are welcome to attend.
Get to Know You Interviews
Participate in the upcoming Get to Know You Interviews on February 6th and 7th by booking a slot through PAM (Simon Everywhere) before 1 pm on Tuesday. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss their child with the teacher, and if booking issues arise, contact the School Office for assistance in fostering a strong home-school partnership.
Parent Information Sheets
Look out for organisational details for classrooms sent home with students on Monday. Bring any questions about this information to the Get to Know You Meetings (GTKY) with your child's teacher. Additionally, complete the GTKY Meetings questionnaire to share your child's strengths, challenges, and interests during the meeting.
Year 3-6 AFL Visit
Richmond Football Club's Community Camp in Sunraysia this week includes an AFL Player Visit on Thursday at 11:30 am in the Stadium, for students in Years 3-6. Don't miss this exciting 45-minute session!
Pupil Free Day
Next Friday, August 9th, the school will be closed as staff engage in professional learning focused on Structured Literacy, aligning with our School Improvement goal to enhance literacy outcomes by fostering the capability of staff and teams in implementing best practice literacy instruction.
School Photos
Next week, families will receive details about our scheduled School Photos on Monday, February 19th. Look out for information, and remember to place your orders online. All students should wear their full summer school uniform, and those with PE on this day should bring their runners to change into at school.
Shrove Tuesday Breakfast
On Tuesday, February 13th, join us for a free pancake breakfast from 7:45 am to 8:40 am as we observe Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins in our Catholic church calendar. If you can assist with serving, setting up, or cooking, please inform the Office.
Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day is this Tuesday, a global event uniting communities worldwide to promote safer online spaces. As technology has advanced significantly in the past two decades, bringing enormous benefits, it has also introduced risks with real-world impacts, underscoring the importance of online safety awareness. Mrs Taylor will address safe internet use in this week’s Digital Tech lessons, covering eRules and breaches.
School Assemblies
Starting in 2024, our school assemblies will now take place every two weeks, allowing classes to present up to two awards at each assembly. This change, with classes presenting only once per year, provides additional time for focused learning. Assembly dates for each class are set out in your SIMON Calendar.
God Bless!
Mr Mark Gibson

Learning Diversity
SWPBS News
At Sacred Heart we want everyone in our community to be Respectful, Responsible and Safe. Our school wants us to develop these values so that they become a part of how we live our life at school each day. This will lead to a safer, kinder and more considerate school community and will help everyone to be able to learn and grow to their full potential.
As a Catholic School, the example of Jesus is at the heart of all that we do. This is how Jesus lived his life and we encourage everyone to be the best versions of themselves each day and contribute to our school in a positive way.
As part of our commitment to creating a respectful, responsible, and safe learning environment, we have implemented a School Wide Positive Behavior Matrix. This matrix outlines the expected behaviours of being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe that we strive to see from every member of our school community.
Each fortnight, we will be launching a special focus from our Matrix. Our first focus is on the value of ACCEPTANCE. We firmly believe that fostering a sense of acceptance is crucial in creating an inclusive and harmonious environment for everyone.
During this period, students in all classes will be engaging in discussions and activities centred around the concept of acceptance. We will be exploring various ways to demonstrate acceptance, including:
- Kind and Friendly Communication: Students will learn the importance of using kind and friendly words when interacting with others.
- Inclusion: Students will discover the power of including others in their activities and interactions in a kind and friendly manner, particularly those new to our school community.
- Helping Others: Students will understand how assisting others in a kind and friendly way can contribute to a positive atmosphere.
- Respecting Differences: The significance of respecting and appreciating the diversity among our peers will be emphasised.
To enhance this learning experience, we will be utilising videos and activities that demonstrate kindness and helping others.
As we introduce these behaviours, we encourage our students to actively model them within the school environment. Our dedicated teachers will be on the lookout for instances of acceptance, providing constructive feedback, and acknowledging those who embody this expectation.
Foundation News
The Foundation students have had a great week working with their teacher, getting to know their classmates and settling into school routines. We have also spent a lot of time with our Year 6 buddies: playing games, doing activities, reading stories and eating recess and lunch together.
Some reminders for the beginning of the year:
- Each morning the students need to do their jobs before finding something to do. They need to bring into the classroom from their bag their drink bottle, lunch container, snack container and brainfood container.
- The school library books are borrowed on Wednesday and returned on the following Monday. If your child does not bring back their books or does not have their library bag on library day they will not be able to borrow new books.
- Your child’s library bag needs to be at school every day - kept in their school bag.
- Please begin to bring in a pair of headphones for use on the iPads.
- Remember to use 2 small containers for recess and lunch so that they fit into our fridge boxes. The time frame the students have to eat their lunch and snack is short so packing a sandwich and one other thing is often enough and then 2-3 snacks for recess. Here is an example of the perfect size snack and lunch containers. Please be mindful of students with allergies to nuts.
- Brainfood needs to be in a small container and placed on children’s tables in the morning.
- Sports days are Thursday and Friday - sports uniform is to be worn on these days.
This week we begin our work in Religion. To assist with our learning we ask that each student email their teacher a family photo by Monday. This will be printed and displayed in our classrooms on our ‘Family Tree’.
Cooinda - bocallaghan@shmildura.catholic.edu.au
Wahroonga hmoore@shmildura.catholi.edu.au .
Today your child brought home a Foundation Information Sheet for 2024, a home QR code for Seesaw and a Get To Know You form. The Get To Know You Form needs to be completed and brought to the meeting next week. The Seesaw QR code will connect you to your child’s digital learning portfolio. In this portfolio you will be able to see examples of your child’s school work.
We came across this article that we thought might be extremely helpful as we transition to school.
Foundation Rest Days:
Students will have the following days/dates as a rest day from school:
Friday 9th February
Wednesday 14th February
Wednesday 21st February
Wednesday 28th February
Monday 11th March
We look forward to meeting parents this week for our Get to Know You Interviews and hearing about your child.
Year One News
Welcome back to all Sacred Heart Families. We hope you enjoyed a special time with those you love during the school holiday break. We are looking forward to working in partnership with you to support the children in their educational journey. We warmly welcome Jack Morrison who has begun Year one in Karinya.
Library borrowing: Students will need to bring their library bag along with all their borrowing books back to school on this day. Without a library bag, our children are not able to borrow.
Karinya- Tuesday
Bundaleer- Wednesday
Students will need to bring their daily reader, diary and library bag to school each day to change. This will begin next week.
Each Day: All Children will need to have their drink bottle, named navy school hat and library bag at school with them. Show and Tell will begin in Week 3 and a timetable for this will be sent home next week.
Year One classroom doors will open at 8:45 each day. Students are encouraged to go to the toilet, have a drink and a play before coming into the classroom each day.
All students are asked to bring in a named set of headphones to be used in the classroom before 10th February, as ee will need these in Week 3.
We are very excited for the new school year and are facilitating 'Getting to Know you Interviews' on 6th and 7th February. We hope to see you then.
Year Two News
We have had a great start to school this year in the Year 2 rooms! Children have settled quickly and are excited for the learning to come. We especially welcome Audrey Marciano and Annabel Chigozie-Eke to Sacred Heart.
We have noticed that the lunch and recess containers are not fitting into our Blue Fridge boxes. This means they are overflowing and very heavy. We would appreciate it if children could be supplied with a smaller box that is adequate for the food supplied. Some food items may not need to go into the fridge and could stay in their bags.
Just a reminder about the need to bring Library Bags to school every day, so that the children can pack their work, books, notes, and diary safely to take home. Library day for Year 2 is every Friday, however due to the School Closure day on Friday we will borrow on Wednesday instead.
Sports days for Waminda are Monday and Friday; Barramunga are Tuesday and Friday - sports uniform is to be worn on these days.
If your child has not yet brought in a pair of headphones, can they please do this by the end of Week 2.
We look forward to meeting parents at our Get To Know You interviews and learning more about your child.
Year Three News
We have had a wonderful start to the year in Year Three! All students are settling into their new classrooms and have enjoyed getting to know their peers and teachers further. Over the next two weeks, Year Three students will be preparing their Class Captain speeches, which is an exciting milestone for them. We would like to welcome our new students Natalie Gervasi, Valentina Ienco, Daniel Ponthokkan to Sacred Heart Primary School.
Here are some quick reminders for our Year Three families:
Please send named headphones to school.
We are currently experiencing difficulty fitting all children’s lunch boxes into our allocated fridge space. We would appreciate the use of smaller lunch boxes, or if fridge items are separated into smaller containers and clearly named.
Students will be taking their pencil cases with their stationery supplies home on Friday, to be named. Your child will be provided with an optional printed set of paper labels, You may have a different type of name labels, this is ok to use as well. Thank you!
We will be beginning nightly reading next week. Your child will be sent home with their reading diaries. Please encourage your child to be independent with their reading, filling out their diaries and returning them to school each morning to be signed by their classroom teacher.
We are looking forward to seeing you all at the Get to Know You interviews!
Sarah, Emma and Maree.
Year Four News
In Year Four we welcome three new students Excel Chigozie-Eke, Oscar Marson and Poppy Fraser to Sacred Heart Primary School.
We have had a positive start to the year and we look forward to seeing all the parents next week at our Getting To Know You Interviews. Please ensure all students have named pencil cases and headphones at school as soon as possible.
Our library day for Year Four is Wednesday, please remember to send along their library bags.
Our doors are always open, please come in and say hello.
Year Five News
Any students who are interested in being Eumeralla or Minga’s Class Captain for 2024 will be taking part in speeches on Monday 5th of February. Students have been provided with small suggestions for them to follow as they write their speech. If they prefer to use cue cards, this is strongly encouraged. We wish these students good luck.
We ask that students name their stationery for their pencil cases as soon as possible.
If your child has not yet brought in a pair of headphones, can they please do this by the end of Week 2.
Just a friendly reminder that the Year 5 sports days are Monday and Wednesday. Our Library day is Tuesday.
Year Six News
Reminders:
- Students have been asked to bring in a small glass jar to use for a time capsule activity. A jam jar would be the perfect size for this activity.
- All students are asked to bring in a named set of headphones to be used in the classroom.
- Stationery has been sent home over the weekend, we ask that this is clearly labelled and returned to school Monday.
Congratulations to those students who presented for Class Captain in their respective classes. It was great to see the confidence and the enthusiasm to take on a leadership role from many of our students.
The Year Six students have been super supportive big buddies. They have LOVED working with the Prep’s this week and have been amazing in helping their buddies settle into the routines of school.
Library
Welcome to the 2024 school year at SHPS. Students and staff have had a great first week and have enjoyed their library sessions. Most classes have explored and borrowed books to read and engage in, some to take home and others to enjoy in their classrooms.
This year, Ms Ag Zema has taken time away from the library to pursue studies. We wish her all the best for the year ahead. I am happy to announce that I have taken Ms Zema’s place in the library part-time. My name is Mrs Maree Irvin, and I work on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the library. Please feel free to contact me at mirvin@shmildura.catholic.edu.au

Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!
Pick Up and Drop Off Points
These designated areas serve as convenient points for collecting or dropping off children at the school if you are walking in with them. Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.
Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.
Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.
Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.
Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.
School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay website https://shmildura.cdfpay.org.au
